The Cocke County Fighting Cocks come to Lower Afton on Thursday night for Homecoming clash with Chuckey-Doak, the game was originally scheduled for Friday night but due to expected downpours leading up to the contest Chuckey-Doak is hopeful that moving the game up will allow for better playing conditions.
The Chuckey-Doak Black Knights put a whoopin’ on Unaka to open the 2024 campaign 71-46 when a track meet broke out at a football game but haven’t seen the win column since.
The Knights have lost four consecutive contests since that week one win and have struggled to score.
To generate more offense Head Coach Billy Kaylor says, “We just have to get better and execute. You know it feels like we’re miles aways from where we need to be, but it’s really just inches and playing in a short week on short notice we gotta be at our best. We’ve watched film and practiced Tuesday and Wednesday…it wasn’t a walk-through and it wasn’t full contact…we had trick ourselves into thinking we got a full week of practice in, so I feel we good about our week.”
The Knight have had their share injuries this season and Kaylor says, “while everyone is on the mend and everyone is expected back at some point this year, we’re still down several players this week.”
The Fighting Cocks are 0-5 on the season, but don’t let their record fool you as they play in the very tough region 1, in the 5A division, two divisions up from where the Knights play. Cocke County is averaging nearly 20 point a game and nearly got into the win column last week versus David Crockett, falling 41-38.
Kaylor explains, “Despite the 0-5 record they’re a solid football team, they run the ball well and they run it hard. We’ll have to be disciplined in order to stop them, they have some good sized guys and they’re fast. On offense we need to take care of the ball and just do the little things well and that starts up front.”
The game is slated to start at 7pm on Thursday evening with the Homecoming festivities before the game.
