Mother Nature stays undefeated. What started out as a nice warm Tuesday evening for football ended with lightning in the surrounding areas putting a stop to Tuesday’s contest.
Chuckey-Doak played toe-to-toe, but was not able to finish on top. Cloudland was declared the winner after the game was called off with 7:57 left in the 4th. The Highlanders won 20-12.
Black Knights Head Coach Nicholas Quillen was pleased with the performance and said this about his team’s play. “I liked our effort. We didn’t stop, there was no quit when we went down. We kept coming to the fight and that’s something we preach to the boys,” he said.
After Chuckey-Doak three and out Cloudland took the ball and marched downfield, finishing its first drive with a touchdown to go up 8-0.
In response, Chuckey-Doak’s Brody Myers found Mikey Karriker open for a pass that he turned into a 69-yard touchdown. One broken tackle and a foot sprint later and it was 8-6.
Cloudland responded with a touchdown again to bump their lead up to 14-6.
With less than two minutes until the half, Chuckey-Doak pulled off a hook-and-ladder play on 4th down to save the drive. The 17-yard pickup gave it a new set of sticks and opened the door for Zaiden Schacke to run 22 yards into the end zone. Another two-point try failed and Chuckey-Doak trailed 14-12 going into the break.
“It gives us an advantage. Our kids are ready for whatever we call and that’s a play that we have. Very proud of them not fumbling the ball on the hook-and-ladder,” Quillen explained.
Cloudland scored on their first drive of the second half and went up 20-12. The Black Knights were moving downfield before a costly fumble ended their hopes of tying the game.
Chuckey-Doak got the ball back one more time, but could not reach the end zone before lightning struck. The game was called off with Cloudland ahead 20-12 with 7:57 left in the fourth.
“I’m proud of their effort. And if we get to finish the last eight minutes, who knows what could happen. It’s football sometimes,” Coach Quillen expressed.
Chuckey-Doak falls to 0-1 with the defeat and hosts West Greene next Thursday in Lower Afton.
