High school anglers, including competitors from Chuckey-Doak and South Greene, cast their lines at Watts Bar Lake on Friday and Saturday in pursuit of a state title during the Tennessee BASS Nation High School State Championships.
Kingston’s Canden Cranfill and Turner Tharpe claimed the championship, reeling in 10 fish over the two-day event with a combined weight of 49.81 pounds.
Chuckey-Doak senior Brodie Gibson, fishing in his final high school competition, along with his brother Kolbie, brought home a 40th place finish. The duo landed five fish on the opening day totaling 11.64 pounds and added four more fish on day two weighing 11.34 pounds, giving them a two-day total of nine fish for 22.98 pounds.
South Greene senior Shane Williams was the only other local anglers to qualify for the tournament. Williams, also competing in his final competition caught two fish on the first day weighing 5.05 pounds but was unable to land a keeper on day two, resulting in a 107th-place finish.
