The Chuckey-Doak Lady Black Knights jumped out to an early lead over South Greene on Tuesday night and never looked back on the way to a 60-42 win.
The Lady Knights leaned on an offensive attack that consistently found success inside, while winning the battle of the boards to shut down the Lady Rebels offense.
“We just wanted play tough. We talk a lot about how defense leads into offense and I thought we did that. Our plan is to always play tough and be physical, and to play with passion. I think we did that tonight,” said Chuckey-Doak Head Coach Kyle Donahue of his Lady Black Knights’ win on Tuesday night.
Chuckey-Doak jumped out to an early 19-10 lead with a balanced offense that scored from the inside-out and capitalized on South Greene turnovers with transition buckets.
The Lady Rebels found success in the first quarter by driving into the paint, but were unable to establish consistency on offense, turning the ball over 21 times.
The Lady Black Knights’ defense was tenacious throughout, getting into passing lanes and fighting for loose balls to increase offensive possessions. Coach Donahue praised the defensive effort of his team, saying, “That is a staple of our team. We want to be a defensive-first team. Every day we work on defense; every day we want to be tough on defense. I thought we played really, really well and a lot of that led into good offense.”
Chuckey-Doak took a 35-19 lead to the half and never looked back.
South Greene came out in the second half looking to cut into the lead, but was unable to establish rhythm.
Chuckey-Doak continued their offensive attack in the third quarter, with Traylyn Southerland leading the Lady Black Knights with a barrage of second chance opportunities from offensive rebounding; a stat the Lady Black Knights led 13-6 over South Greene for the game.
The rebounding discrepancy was the tale of the third quarter, with Chuckey-Doak out scoring South Greene 19-10 in the period. The Black Knights took a 54-29 lead to the fourth quarter when Coach Stephen Gregg subbed in a younger lineup for the remainder of the game.
South Greene closed the game in the final quarter by holding the Lady Knights to only six points. The damage was already done, though, as Chuckey-Doak defeated the Lady Rebels 60-42.
Kennedy Brown led Chuckey-Doak with 13 points. Traylyn Southerland added 12 and Layla Fox had 11.
South Greene was led on offense by Natalie Foshie with seven points.
The Lady Knights move to 4-1 in District 1-2A and are at the top of the conference standings. South Greene falls to 3-2 in region play.
