Tusculum sprinter Tyrell Edwards and basketball forward Jami Tham have been named the Zaxby’s Athletes of the Week. Tham earns this honor for a fourth time this season.
Edwards earned a victory in the 60 meters at the Mondo College Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Saturday. He qualified for finals in the 60 meters with a time of 6.87 in prelims, then ran 6.78 in the final to earn the win with the 11th-fastest time in Division II this season, which moves him into second place on the Pioneer all-time performance list. Edwards also finished sixth in the 200 meters at 23.25 seconds.
The Toco, Trinidad & Tobago native was an NJCAA All-American in the 60 meters during the 2021 season while competing for New Mexico Junior College. His time of 6.78 is currently tied for the fastest in the South Atlantic Conference this season.
Tham averaged 20.0 points and 16.0 rebounds as the Pioneers split two games last week to remain atop the SAC Mountain Division standings. Tham finished with 25 points, 19 rebounds, and six assists while playing all 50 minutes of Wednesday’s 83-81 double-overtime loss at Carson-Newman, then followed up with 15 points and 13 rebounds in Saturday’s 54-52 victory over Wingate. Tham shot 44.1 percent (15-for-34) from the field and 81.8 percent (9-for-11) from the foul line while adding three steals and two blocked shots.
The Arlington, Virginia native continues to lead Division II in rebounding at 14.3 per game and is tied for third in the SAC in scoring at 18.4 points per game. She is second in the conference in field-goal percentage at 56.1 percent and leads all Division II players with 18 double-doubles in as many games.
