KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee women’s tennis team standout Elza Tomase earned All-America status, the ITA announced Tuesday. The senior collected the distinction in singles after garnering doubles honors last season with Sofia Cabezas.
Tomase is just the sixth player in program history to be named a singles and doubles All-American, joining Margie Lepsi, Manisha Malhotra, Vilmarie Castellvi, Caitlin Whoriskey and Sofia Cabezas.
Singles All-America plaudits are given to student-athletes who finish in the top 20 of the final ITA singles rankings, win the ITA All-American singles title and/or advance to the round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championship.
One of the most decorated players in Tennessee women’s tennis history, Tomase has dominated atop the lineup in her final season. Tomase capped off her senior campaign with a 26-12 record, including eight stellar victories over ranked opponents. The Liepaja, Latvia, native has been ranked in every single ITA singles and doubles poll, placing as high as No. 4 in singles and No. 23 in doubles, the latter alongside Catherine Aulia.
“Anytime your team has an All-American singles player on it, that player is always helping the program out,” head coach Alison Ojeda said. “What doesn’t always happen is that that same player is also a standout individual. Elza has become one of the most giving individuals we have on our team. She, Leyla Britez Risso and Catherine Aulia have really taken our program to another level. Elza embraces the day-to-day culture that our program sets and she leads by example. I’m really proud of all she has accomplished and excited for her future.”
This spring, Tomase knocked off eight ranked singles foes and three ranked pairs in doubles, including tallying a six-match winning streak to start the dual season. Her highest-ranked singles triumph came against No. 3 DJ Bennett in a 6-0, 6-1 standout performance on Senior Day. Tomse earned SEC Player of the Week honors on Jan. 29, 2025.
Tomase owns 98 career singles victories, putting her in 10th place on Tennessee’s all-time list. The senior garnered All-SEC honors for the fourth consecutive year. She joins Vilmarie Castellvi and Crystal Cleveland as the only players in program history to be four-time All-SEC recipients.
Tomase is the 20th All-American in Lady Vol history, including the fourth under head coach Ojeda.
