The North Greene girls started fast on Tuesday night and by halftime built a lead that Chuckey-Doak could not come back from as the Lady Huskies collected a 65-34 win over their cross-county rivals.
“I thought we came out with a lot of energy and forced a few turnovers early. We ran a few sets that we executed fairly well. I thought we made good adjustments throughout the game. We have struggled to shoot in this gym a lot of times, but we made several threes and put a lot of points on the board in the first half. It was a good night,” North Greene coach James Buchanan said.
Josie Graham got the night started by draining a triple from beyond the elbow just nine seconds after the Lady Huskies won the opening tip.
In the contest North Greene spread the ball around the three-point line with seven different players hitting from deep as the Lady Huskies made a total of 11 three-pointers.
“I think we are a well-balanced team, and if we have a night where we’re all hitting we can have a 40-point half,” Buchanan said. “We can’t guarantee we’ll get that every night, and that is why keep emphasizing defense. But it is a luxury to know that they can’t just count on defending one or two kids.”
With 2:35 left in the first quarter the Natalie Foshie landed a three-pointer from the left wing to give North Greene its first double-digit lead at 18-7.
Tralyn Southerland went on to hit from behind the arc, and after a quick turnover Ella Head banked in a triple 11 seconds later for a 26-7 lead.
Graham scored the final points of the first quarter when Leonard lobbed a pass to her for a backdoor layup that made it 28-7.
Graham led North Greene with 15 points on Tuesday and 12 of them came in the fast-paced first quarter.
“We have been encouraging Josie to shoot it more, and when she knocked the first on of the game it was a welcome sight,” Buchanan said. “She’s a very unselfish kid, and maybe sometime her confidence gets down. But we’ve been telling her that we need her to score and it was good to see her do that tonight.”
Chuckey-Doak’s Carlene Bishop started the second quarter by running the length of the floor for a layup, but on the next possession Leonard drained a three-pointer for North Greene.
The Lady Huskies were able to close the first half on a 12-2 run to stretch the lead to 46-16. Leonard hit from deep twice in that stretch and Cadie McDevitt added another three-pointer before the teams went to the break.
Leonard finished the night with 12 points, all from beyond the arc.
In the third quarter North Greene backed out of its pressing defense and went deeper into its rotation. That slowed down the scoring and Chuckey-Doak was able to keep pace.
Chuckey-Doak’s Chloe Kirkpatrick started the second half by scoring on a putback. Jayden Myers went on to nail a three-pointer and then she turned a steal into a pair of free throws as the gap closed to 51-28.
After Heidi Trentham scored on an offensive rebound North Greene took a 53-28 lead into the fourth quarter.
Satine Johson scored North Greene’s first four points of the fourth quarter. Addi Dean then hit from long range twice in the closing minutes as North Greene finished the night leading 65-34.
Bishop led Chuckey-Doak on Tuesday with 14 points.
