The Greeneville High School athletic department and administration released a statement Wednesday morning stating that the football team inadvertently played an ineligible player against Tennessee High to open the season and the team will forfeit the 54-7 decision against the Vikings.
The player in question, according to the statement, did not participate in the 35-0 victory against Dobyns-Bennett and the Greeneville record will now stand at 1-1.
The school became aware of the eligibility issue August 28th, which was the Wednesday following the game with Tennessee High. The team had inadvertently omitted the student athlete’s eligibility paperwork to the TSSAA. Greeneville self-reported the issue to the TSSAA and filed a hardship application for the student athlete which was approved and the player will be eligible for the remainder of the season.
Mark Reeves, the executive director of the TSSAA, commended the Greeneville administration on how the issue was handled.
