Greeneville’s Quillen Commits To Commodores

It might have been the most perfect storybook ending after he lofted a two-run double into centerfield to clinch a state championship for the Greeneville Greene Devils, but there will be at least one more chapter in Carson Quillen’s baseball journey.

After a few months of uncertainty, the recent Greeneville High graduate announced Saturday night that he was committed to play baseball at Vanderbilt University.

“Vanderbilt has an amazing coaching staff with Tim Corbin being there over 20 years. Year in and year out they are competing for the SEC championship and national championships and I want to be part of that,” Quillen said. “I really like the standard that they set for the program, and they make you earn everything. It came down choosing a place that can better me in life, and as a baseball player.

Quillen finished his senior season as Class 3A’s Mr. Baseball award winner, a two-time state champion and a three-time All-State selection. He was a finalist for Mr. Football and a three-time All-State selection in football, making him one of the most decorated athletes in Greeneville High history.

Quillen had been committed to Virgina Tech since he was a sophomore, but after football season ended he reopened his recruitment. It took a few months to figure out what sport he wanted to play and where he would go for college, but an opportunity to play for the Commodores was too good to pass up.

“At first the process of opening up the recruitment was tough. I hadn’t been to any camps in a couple of years. I hadn’t tried to get recruited in a while,” Quillen said. “Football season ended and football coaches are calling, so there was a period where I thought about doing that. I wasn’t sure what I should do. I went into baseball season thinking this could be my last baseball season and tried to play like every game could be my last. There was a point during baseball season I told my parents I was going to play football, I just never made the phone call to the coach. But ultimately after this season I couldn’t imagine baseball being over. I just couldn’t put baseball down. It was a tough decision, but I know I came to the right decision. I know it’s late in the process and I feel blessed to be in this spot. Coach Crobin and the Vanderbilt coaches have been amazing in this process.”

The former Greene Devils was most excited about the opportunity to play for Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin, who is one of the most respected skippers in college baseball. Corbin has led Vanderbilt since 2003, winning two national championships and advancing to five College World Series. Under Corbin the Commodores have won two of the last three SEC Tournaments.

“I feel like I can grow a lot playing under that guy,” Quillen said. “I hate to call him old school because he does things the way they should be done, but he’s such a first-class guy that wants to do things the right way. He’s so respected in the sport and has accomplished so much, but he was so welcoming to me. His wife is at every practice and every game, and he lives like the team is his family.”

In his senior season at Greeneville Quillen turned in some of the best offensive statistics in the state with a .512 batting average, 21 doubles, 69 runs scored, 36 RBIs and 49 stolen bases. On defense he was standout shortstop for the Devils, but as he moves on to college he is looking to get on the field wherever the opportunity presents itself. The Commodores value versatility and he is hoping to become a “three glove guy” at Vanderbilt.

“Coach Corbin has a philosophy where he wants guys that can move around the filed,” Quillen said. “They want guys that are baseball players. They want guys that have the skills to move around the field and just play the game. He said when they are giving out equipment that they have guys that get three gloves every year. That’s what I want, I want to get three gloves. I want to be able to move around and put myself in the best position to get on the field. Whatever I need to do to get on the field the fastest is what I’m going to do.

The opportunity to play in the top conference in college baseball is another exciting prospect for Quillen. The last six national champions have been SEC teams and the conference’s rosters are filled with the nation’s top players. Quillen welcomes the challenge and wants a chance to take on the best opponents on a daily basis.

“I’m one of the most competitive people when I get on the field, and it means a lot to play in the SEC,” Quillen said. “If I’m going to do it I want to do it at the highest level against the best people. I think that is what Vanderbilt represents. They hold the team to the highest standard. I want to be challenged, I’m looking forward to those new challenges.”

The chance to get a degree from one of the nation’s most prestigious academic institutions was another positive Vanderbilt offered. Vanderbilt is the top ranked academic institution in the SEC and in the latest US News and World Report Rankings it was the 18th ranked university in the nation.

“To be able to play baseball at the level they play and get a degree from a school like Vanderbilt means a lot to me,” Quillen said. “That goes into how they handle their baseball program. They have standards for their players in the classroom and on the field. To be able to graduate from a place like that puts me in a successful spot for my future.”
