Afton – North Greene’s Lady Huskies jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and held on to defeat Chuckey Doak in softball action Tuesday afternoon, 8-5. Hailey Bailey and Loren Blevins paced North Greene’s 12-hit offensive attack collecting three each and driving in a total of three runs.
The Huskies would get on the board in the top of the first when Matti Phillips singled, stole second, and then scored on Bailey’s single. They would tag on two more runs in the third and fourth innings with Phillips’ double being the big blow.
Phillips was as equally impressive in the circle striking out four and allowing two hits in the first three innings, but ran into trouble in the fourth. Following back to back singles by Hailey Foshee and Haylee Taylor, a wild pitch, and back to back walks, the Knights would be on the board, ending Phillips’ day. Hannah Brooks came on in relief to get the final two outs of the inning, but not before Ritchea laced a single to left driving in two runs and cutting the score to 5-3.
Single runs in the fifth and sixth would push North Greene’s lead to 7-3. Chuckey Doak would not go away quietly in their half of the sixth when Sania Atchison lifted a triple to center driving in two, making the score 7-5.
In the seventh, Bailey led off with a single, stole second, and scored an insurance run as Blevins doubled to center, making the score 8-5. The Lady Knights showed that “quit” was not part of their team’s vocabulary when Kaylee Foshee and Madison Malone collected singles, bringing the tying run to the plate with only one out. Brooks, however would get the final two hitters to strike out, bringing her strikeout total to 7, and ending the game.
Both teams will take part in the Tiny Day Memorial Tournament this weekend.
