The Greeneville Middle School soccer team traveled to Indian Trail on Tuesday with hopes of avenging an earlier season loss and advancing to the District 1 Tournament semifinals. Despite outshooting the Lady Hawks 9–4 on goal, the Lady Devils came up short, falling 2–0 to end their season.
“It just wasn’t our night,” said head coach Rustin Jones. “We outshot them, we had better chances, but we just did not capitalize on ours while they did.”
Greeneville goalkeeper Leia Alexander recorded two saves, but the Hawks managed to break through with goals in the 9th and 36th minutes.
The Lady Devils had opportunities of their own. Blakely Crum nearly converted a breakaway with a shot toward the top shelf, and Elsie Rogers created several chances, but the Indian Trail keeper came up with key stops to preserve the shutout.
Greeneville closes its season with a 10–5 record, an impressive mark in just the program’s second year. Coach Jones praised his squad’s effort and leadership, especially from the eighth graders.
“We’re going to miss our eighth graders,” Jones said. “They were a big part of getting this program started and the early success we’ve had.”
