Greeneville celebrated Senior Night on Tuesday night and began the postseason with a 7-0 win over Grainger at Fox Field in the District 2-AA Tournament.
“It feels great to come out here and honor our seniors tonight, Vivian Kammerdiener and Angelyn Diaz. Did a lot of good things tonight. Our girls developed a lot of good runs especially in the final third. Getting goals from multiple girls and the important thing is we’re leaving healthy tonight,” Greeneville Head Coach Jerry Graham stated.
The Lady Devils continued their winning tradition in the postseason on Tuesday. The win helped Greeneville advance to Thursday’s District 2-AA Championship Game and host Volunteer after the Lady Falcons defeated Cherokee 8-0.
Greeneville has won 22-straight regular season championships and are chasing their 22nd-straight District Tournament Championship on Thursday night. Tuesday’s win also extends Greeneville’s win streak versus district opponents to 105 games.
The seniors celebrated on Tuesday have been a huge part of that continued success. Vivian Kammerdiener and Angelyn Diaz were honored and celebrated before the beginning of the game. Both seniors helped bring Greeneville 4-straight Regular Season Championships, 3-straight District Tournament Championships, 2 Region Championships, 3-straight State Tournament appearances, and made it to the final four and finals in two of those three State Tournament runs.
Both seniors finished with a combined 3 goals and 3 assists. 5 of the 7 goals were directly attributed to both seniors.
“It’s always special when both get to score on Senior Night,” Coach Graham expressed. “Happy for those two girls and what they mean to our program for four years. They deserve that.”
The win improved Greeneville’s record to 13-4-1.
The Lady Devils wasted no time before aiming at the goal. Vivian Kammerdiener looked to have a goal only 37 seconds in before a side judge ruled Kammerdiener offsides. Kammerdiener still found a way to secure a goal on Senior Night with a strike in the 5th minute assisted by senior counterpart Angelyn Diaz.
Greeneville led 1-0 early and extended the lead with a pair of goals from sophomore Kinsley Spradlen only 27 seconds apart. The first was assisted by Kammerdiener and the second was a rebounded shot sent right back at the goal. The Lady Devils led 3-0 after the 11th minute.
Greeneville’s other senior, Angelyn Diaz, scored next with a goal in the 14th minute assisted by Harper Neas. Neas helped the lead grow to 4-0 with an assist and then 5-0 with a goal of her own. Neas found the back of the net in the 17th minute and extended the Lady Devils lead to 5-0.
Vivian Kammerdiener scored the sixth and final goal of the first half with a strike in the 23rd minute off a corner kick from Julieann Raby to send Greeneville ahead 6-0.
The Lady Devils went scoreless for the final 17 minutes of the half and led 6-0 at the break.
The scoreless drought ended at 21 minutes as Peyton Vaught stuck one in the back of the net and made it 7-0 in the 44th minute. The shot was assisted by Diaz.
The game remained scoreless the rest of the way as Greeneville continued pounding away shot after shot, but never put one between the pipes. In total, Greeneville took 70 shots with 50 on goal. Grainger’s senior goalie Abrie Nickels was credited with 43 saves and unofficially finished with 987 career saves. The Lady Grizzlies had 2 shots all contest and one on goal.
Greeneville finished Senior Night with a 7-0 victory over Grainger and advanced to Thursday’s District 2-2A Championship Game.
Thursday’s Championship will be held at Fox Field at 6 PM.
Coach Graham described what it will take to add another golf plaque to Greeneville’s trophy case on Thursday. “I think it’s gonna take a disciplined effort by our girls to not get stressed out. Sometimes the space can get crowded in that final third and they like to compact that space. So, I think for us to be disciplined in what we’re trying to do and how we’re gonna attack that final third and not get frustrated with ourselves. We did a good job last time so I hope we have the same type of effort against them. Just a real disciplined effort.”
