The North Greene volleyball team traded blows with West Greene on Tuesday night and picked up three tough set wins to top the Lady Buffaloes 3-1, 18-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-22.
“That was a great match, both teams went back and forth in a really good volleyball match,” North Greene coach Tanna Stansfield said. “I’m so proud of these girls. We started a little flat, but we made the adjustments. They played so strong and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
Both teams are now 1-1 in District 1-A play while North Greene gained a leg up on the Lady Buffaloes. Tuesday was also West Greene’s first loss of the season. Both teams will finish the week with another league contest, West Greene will host South Greene on Thursday and North Greene will host Happy Valley.
“It’s huge to get a district win,” Stansfield said. “The girls were really disappointed with the way we played against South Greene, because we didn’t play our best. We watched film and worked on a few things yesterday and I think those things were to our advantage today.”
In Tuesday’s first set North Greene built a 9-6 lead after Kinlea Eastep slammed a kill from the left side and Kenzie Burns dropped in an ace.
Three mishits by North Greene brought West Greene back into the set and then Madi Evans tied things at 12-12 with an ace. After a right side kill from Aleea Aiken and a tip by Journey Lamons West Greene capped a 7-0 run with a 15-12 lead.
A slam by Josie Graham pulled North Greene back within one at 15-14, but the Lady Huskies never regained the lead.
The Lady Buffs’ lead reached 22-15 on and ace by Emma Gray before they took a 25-18 win.
In the second set the two teams traded points early and things were tied seven times on the way to a 9-9 deadlock. North Greene got a kill and a block from Cadie McDevitt while Carleigh Williams and Morgan Moody landed kills for West Greene.
North Greene took a 12-9 lead after three straight West Greene errors.
West Greene came back and took a 14-13 lead when Moody finished a long volley with a hard swing from the left side.
The Lady Huskies followed with kills from Tralyn Southerland and Kinlea Eastep to swing in front at 17-15.
From there the set saw four more ties, the last coming at 22-22 when Burns pushed a ball to the back line.
Graham landed an ace to give North Greene the last lead and then McDevitt scored on a free ball before the Lady Huskies evened things at 1-1 with a 25-22 win.
With Evans serving West Greene scored the first three points of the third set. West Greene stayed in front of the tight set early but a missed tip drew things even at 13-13.
Graham followed with two aces for North Greene and Burns beat the block with a right-side kill to put the Lady Huskies in front 17-13.
Eastep came up with another big swing for North Greene and then West Greene missed on four straight kill attempts as the Lady Huskies’ lead grew to 22-14.
From there North Greene moved in front 2-1 with a 25-19 win.
North Greene found its first breathing room of the fourth set at 8-5 after Eastep punched a ball to a void in the defense and Addi Dean got an ace to fall.
West Greene got back to within one point seven times with both teams taking advantage of the other’s errors. The Lady Buffaloes went in front at 18-17 on an ace by Lamons.
An ace by Katelyn Begines kept West Greene in front at 20-19, but then Graham scored on a tip on the next play.
With Southerland serving North Greene went in front 23-20 and McDevitt finished the 25-22 win with a kill from the middle.
