JOHNSON CITY- The South Greene Lady Rebels got their first win on the young season in the Hall of Champions game against the Lady Knights of Providence Academy Friday night.
Lady Rebels head coach Stephen Gregg said, “It’s always good to get that first win under your belt.”
In the early portion of the first quarter Paisley Brobeck went on a scoring spree starting with a pair of free tosses from the line. Kortnei Bailey then ripped off a rebound and hit Brobeck in stride with a three-quarter-court pass for the bucket.
On the next offensive possession Brobeck cleaned up a missed shot for a putback and a 6-0 lead. After a Lady Knights empty possession Brobeck was feeling it and knocked down a triple from the elbow and forced the Lady Knights into a timeout after a 9-0 run to open the game, all nine by Brobeck.
Ari Hoese got into the scoring act with back-to-back buckets. Brobeck hit one of two from the stripe as did Bailey. Bailey then made a jaw-dropping spin move in the lane that faked out nearly everyone. The Lady Rebels were up after one quarter 17-3.
The second quarter started with some sloppy play, by both teams. Each struggled to score but the Lady Rebels finally broke the scoring drought when Hoese found Bailey in the paint for an easy layup at the 3:33 mark for a 19-4 lead. Brobeck then went coast-to-coast after stepping in front of a pass to increase the lead to 21-4. South Greene’s Regan Arrowood scored the final three points of the half when she nailed a triple from the top of the key for 27-7 halftime lead.
Brobeck still had the hot hand, scoring the first points of the second half when she took a pass from Bailey for the layup. It was then Bailey’s turn to go on a scoring spree, scoring on four consecutive trips down the court. She was one of two from the line, twice, then had consecutive put backs to build the lead to 32-12. The final points of the third quarter came from Macy Roberts, Roberts drilled a turn-around jumper through contact, the free throw was good to complete the old-fashioned-three-point play.
With the Lady Rebels up 35-13 the fourth quarter was just a formality, and South Greene went on for its first win of the season 45-24.
The Lady Rebel defense only allowed four field goals the entire game.
Gregg said, “The down side of that is we fouled them a lot and put them on the foul line, so they got a lot more extra free throw attempts, but I felt we were contested on the perimeter good.”
Brobeck lead all scorers with 14 points, while Bailey had 13. The Lady Reb defense held the Lady Knights without a double-digit scorer.
