The TSSAA Class A State Golf Tournament teed off Thursday morning at Sevierville Golf Club, with the Greeneville Lady Devils looking to improve on their fifth-place finish from a year ago.
After the opening round, the Lady Devils sit atop the leaderboard with a team score of 147 (+7), five strokes ahead of Murfreesboro Central (152) and nine ahead of Signal Mountain (156). Summertown (157) and South Gibson (161) round out the top five.
Junior Brylee Catron led the way for Greeneville with a 73 (+3), putting her in a tie for second place—just two shots behind the leader, Elizabeth Prowse of Springfield. Kylee Renner, a sophomore, sits in a tie for fourth at 74 (+4), while her twin sister Kamryn is tied for sixth after carding a 77 (+7).
Coaches were pleased with the team’s performance on day one and are looking forward to another strong showing when play resumes Friday morning at 8:30 a.m.
On the boys’ side, South Greene’s Brennan Gregg finished his round with a 79 (+9), placing him in a tie for 25th. He trails the individual leader, Sam Otwell of Signal Mountain, who shot a 68 (-2). Brennan will tee off on day 2 at 9:36 am.
