WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Juan Hermoso scored in the 64th minute to give Palm Beach Atlantic University a 1-0 victory over Tusculum University Saturday evening in non-conference men’s soccer.
The Sailfish (2-0-0) outshot the Pioneers (0-2-0) by an 11-9 margin, but Tusculum had just one shot on target in the match as PBA keeper Omar Einarsson recorded the shutout victory.
Palm Beach Atlantic had a 4-2 edge in shots over Tusculum in the opening half, with both shots on goal coming from the Sailfish in the first 45 minutes. Tusculum’s lone shot on goal in the match came from Filippo Canaletich in the first minute of the second half.
In the 64th minute, the Sailfish earned a free kick and the service from Marian Rutkowski was headed home by Hermoso for his second goal of the season at 63:38.
Tusculum keeper Noe Delmotte added two saves in the final 15 minutes, but the Pioneer offense was unable to put any attempts on target in the late part of the match despite having four shots in the final eight minutes.
PBA had an 8-6 edge in corner kicks over the Pioneers, who were called for 18 fouls to 11 by the Sailfish. Delmotte had four saves for the Pioneers in the match.
The Pioneers will play their home and South Atlantic Conference opener on Saturday, Sept. 13 against Wingate, beginning at 1 p.m.
