NORTH GREENE 14, UNAKA 3
The North Greene softball team captured the District 1-1A Tournament championship on Wednesday by beating Unaka 14-3.
Both teams move on to the Region 1-1A Tournament, and by winning the Lady Huskies earn the opportunity to host Monday’s semifinal contest.
The Lady Huskies earned 15 hits on Wednesday. Josie Graham was 3-for-4 with a home run, triple, four RBIs and three runs scored. Loren Blevins was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Hannah Brooks, Charlie Turnmire and Heidi Trentham all had doubles.
In the circle Turnmire earned the win. In five innings she struck out two, walked three and allowed eight hits.
CHUCKEY-DOAK 6, HAMPTON 5
Chuckey-Doak was put to the test and battled hard to come away with a 6-5 win against Hampton in Wednesday’s District 1-2A semifinals.
After being ahead 4-1, they let things slip away and faced a 5-4 deficit. Clutch hitting and smart base running from Saniah Atchison, Madison Malone, Emmie Tipton and Jayden Myers lifted them out of their deficit and into the lead.
Atchison went 2-for-2 with three runs. Malone was 1-for-3 with two big RBIs. Tralyn Southerland smashed a moonshot home run in the first inning and Hayleigh Seidl went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Tipton scored the game-winning run off Myers’ RBI-triple in the sixth.
South Greene will be the location and opponent for Chuckey-Doak in Thursday’s District 1-2A Championship.
GRAINGER 13, GREENEVILLE 3
The Greeneville softball team’s season came to an end on Wednesday evening with a 13-3 loss to Grainger in the District 2-3A Tournament.
The Lady Greene Devils were held four hits on Wednesday with Brooke Parsley going 2-for-2. Kaley Garland and Baylee Ramsey each had one hit.
In the circle Jamie Jackson took the loss. In for innings she struck out two, walked three and allowed eight hits. Brynlee Jones threw one inning with three walks, no strike outs and two hits allowed.
TRACK AND FIELD
At the Class A East Sectional Track Meet on Wednesday a handful of local athletes earned a trip to the Spring Fling.
South Greene’s Heath Norton won two sectional championships, finishing first in the boys discus and shot put. South Greene’s Natalie Foshie won the girls discus and will be returning to the Class A state meet. South Greene’s Alexa Gabbard won the Triple Jump to earn a state berth. She was also third in the long jump and fourth in the high jump, and will have a chance to earn an at-large spot in both events.
South Greene’s girls 4×800 relay team of Samantha Birdwell, Abby Hoxie, Julie Harrison, and Ava Leasure placed second and qualified for the state meet.
South Greene’s mixed 4×400 relay team of Birdwell, Hoxie, Noah Case and Trip Neas placed second and will run at state.
The top two finishers in each of the state’s three sectionals automatically qualify for the state meet. Once all sections are complete the next two top finisher in each event earn a wildcard spot.
As a team the South Greene girls placed third and the South Greene boys were fourth.
The Class A State Track Meet will be held on Tuesday, May 20 in Murfreesboro.
