The South Greene Rebels came in to Tuesday night’s contest with a full head of steam after knocking off Dobyns-Bennett last week. The Rebels continued their showing of “team ball” in Lower Afton en route to a 63-24 win over the home standing Chuckey-Doak Black Knights.
“We came out and played well together. We played well together Saturday night against Dobyns-Bennett and it was the first time I had really saw us play good, team basketball. I felt like we started out that way tonight. So, I’m proud of them,” said South Greene Coach Terry Hoese.
The Rebels wasted little time picking up where they left off on Saturday night.
Chandler Gamble was a factor on both offense and defense for the Rebels in the first quarter, taking advantage of his length to grab rebounds and dominate the interior.
The transition offense put South Greene in position to jump out to a 17-3 lead with more than two minutes remaining in the opening quarter, and the Rebels did not look back.
Chuckey-Doak struggled to establish rhythm on offense, netting a lone three-point basket from Ryland Grindstaff in the first 90-seconds of the quarter. After Grindstaff’s made bucket, the Black Knights failed to make another basket in the first. Their offensive woes turned into quick scores for the Rebels’ offense and a 24-3 to start the second quarter.
South Greene continued to click offensively, as the Rebels leaned on a younger cast in the second quarter, but remained effective scoring in the paint. On defense, the Rebels continued to stymie the Black Knights. Grindstaff connected on his second three-point basket, but his lone basket in the second was the only bucket Chuckey-Doak would record in the second quarter.
South Greene took a 39-6 lead to the halftime locker room as the Chuckey-Doak woes continued throughout the entirety of the first half.
“We preach defense. We preach coming out and playing hard to start with and I was happy with the way we performed; especially in the first half,” said Coach Hoese of the Rebels first half performance.
Chuckey-Doak found a bit more success on offense, as Dom Atchison started the scoring within the first thirty seconds of the quarter. However, the Rebels would limit Chuckey-Doak to only 10 points in the third quarter.
South Greene went to the bench to begin the fourth quarter, but the makeup of the game did not change as the Rebels got out in transition off turnovers and rebounds to score quickly. A running clock was enacted in the quarter and ran the rest of the game.
Chandler Gamble led South Greene with 22 points. Gavin Dyer and Cayden Fillers each added eight points for the Rebels.
Ryland Grindstaff led the Black Knights with 12 points.
South Greene’s win pushed the Rebels to 4-1 in Region 1-2A and into second place in the conference behind only Hampton.
