JONESBOROUGH – The South Greene Rebels battled the Volunteer Falcons at David Crockett High School on Saturday evening, and four quarters were not enough to determine a winner. The Rebels outscored the Falcons 12–4 in overtime to win 64-56 and claim their third consecutive Hardee’s Classic title.
“It was not our best effort by any means, but I will take a win any time,” South Greene coach Terry Hoese said.
The Rebels, coming off wins over Daniel Boone and David Crockett, started slowly but trailed only 21–16 at the end of the first quarter. Gavin Dyer dropped in nine first quarter points, but Volunteer took advantage of the outside shooting of Griffin Head, who led his team with 20 points, and the inside presence of Jeremiah Jones, who finished with 16.
South Greene opened the second quarter strong with baskets from Noah Wright and Cayden Fillers to take a 22–21 lead, but costly turnovers allowed Volunteer to head to the locker room up 31–25.
Both teams struggled offensively in the third quarter, continuing to turn the ball over. However, a 10–6 South Greene run cut the Falcons’ lead to 37–35 heading into the final period.
The Rebels had opportunities to tie the game on their first two possessions of the fourth quarter, but consecutive turnovers allowed Volunteer to regain a 41–35 advantage. Will Arrowood knocked down a three-pointer with 6:38 remaining for South Greene’s first basket of the quarter, and Dyer hit two of three free throws to pull the Rebels within one at 41–40.
From there, the game became a back-and-forth battle. Trailing 52–51, South Greene forced a turnover on a jump ball, giving them possession with 28.2 seconds left. Arrowood was fouled with 19.5 seconds to play and made one of two free throws to tie the game at 52–52.
Volunteer called a timeout with 10.3 seconds remaining to set up a potential game-winner. The Falcons worked the ball to the left corner, but the three-point attempt was long, and South Greene secured the rebound to send the game to overtime.
Charlie Lane put the Rebels ahead with a jumper 19 seconds into the extra period, and South Greene never trailed again. Lucas Couch added a free throw and later scored a layup to make it 58–52 before Volunteer finally answered. From there, South Greene knocked down the all-important free throws and sealed the 64-56 win.
Dyer, named the tournament MVP, led South Greene with 22 points. Fillers, selected to the All-Tournament Team, added 12. Arrowood and Couch also earned All-Tournament honors.
Volunteer’s Jones, Head, and Amarion Graves were recognized as well. Rounding out the All-Tournament Team were Caleb Eaves and Nolan Street of Crockett and Will Sutton of Cocke County.
