The South Greene Rebels will play at home on Rebel Hill for the first time this season in front of their faithful fans as they welcome Daniel Boone into Greene County on Friday night.
The Rebels earned their first win over Boone in 54 years last season with a 32-17 victory over the Trail Blazers. South Greene won the first-ever matchup in 1971 and went on to lose 12-straight until last year’s win. South Greene is 2-12 all-time in the series with Boone.
Before the season started Daniel Boone Head Coach Jeremy Jenkins announced it would be his last season leading the Blazers onto the gridiron. Coach Jones and Coach Jenkins are ready for one last battle on Friday. “They’ll come in here playing hard. Coach Jenkins does a great job coaching his teams up. He always does,” South Greene Head Coach Shawn Jones said.
South Greene started the season last week with a disappointing 27-6 loss to Morristown East. The Rebels head into week two’s matchup with Boone looking to make lots of improvements and get in the win column.
“They’re gonna expect to win. They’re a 5A school and we’re a 2A school. When you look on paper they’re supposed to win the ball game, but we don’t feel that way. We feel like if we come out and fix mistakes from last week and we play hard that we’ll have a good opportunity,” Jones added.
Boone began its season with a 30-20 loss hosting Volunteer last week and are currently on a five-game losing streak dating back to last season.
South Greene expects a mix of run and pass plays from Boone’s offense and an odd front on defense.
“They’re gonna do a lot of stuff on both sides of the ball. They’ve got some athletes and we always know they’ve got athletes. We’re going to have to play well Friday night and do what we need to do in order to beat Boone,”
Coach Jones explained. The Rebels had a slow night on offense last week and aim to put together longer drives and find success on the offensive side of the ball.
Coach Jones made an emphasis on winning the turnover battle, getting off the field on third down, and winning the special teams battle on Friday night.
