This Friday night under the lights the West Greene Buffaloes take a trip up I-81 to Blountville to take on the Wolves of West Ridge.
If you’re not familiar with West Ridge it’s probably because the school was just recently built, opening in 2021 to consolidate the former Sullivan South, Sullivan North and Sullivan Central. This will be the first ever meeting between the two schools.
West Greene has just over 500 students according to TSSAA while West Ridge has more than three times that with 1711 students, West Greene coach Evan Monroe says “I believe this is the largest school West Greene has ever played”.
The game came about when both schools had to cancel games that could not be rescheduled due to the recent flooding. Each school had this week as their open date and decided to meet up to allow them to have 10 games this season. Both schools post a 3-4 record heading into the contest.
Monroe says, “They have a pretty good offence, they have a big lanky kid at quarterback that’s not afraid to sling it around the field and throws a pretty good dog-gone deep ball, he’s got a couple good receivers that he likes to throw a 50/50 ball to and they seem to come down with it most of the time.”
“They’re big, they’re fast, they’re strong and there are more of them,” Monroe chuckled. “It’s definitely going to be an uphill battle, but I expect my guys to play hard and compete and to play a team of their caliber only make you better going forward. Our goal is to play hard, minimize mistakes, play as a team and come away healthy and get ready to finish out our conference schedule.”
West Greene is coming off of a 38-0 loss to Hampton last week while West Ridge fell to Jefferson County 48-34.
Gametime is set for 7pm at West Ridge High School, West Ridge is about a 45 minute drive from Mosheim and the school is just off I-81 at exit 63.
Monroe said, “They have a great facility and field, in fact that was one reason we agreed to this game.”
