The West Greene boys basketball team shook off a lackluster start on Thursday and turned up the pressure on North Greene to earn a 55-38 win inside the Huskies’ Den.
“The start was atrocious, and we could have been behind 10-0. But the boys fought back and battled tonight, West Greene coach Allen Tolliver said. “I knew playing a cross-town rival was going to be different. But these boys made a great run and shared the ball well. We had 19 assists and its great to see that kind of team ball.”
Early in the second quarter North Greene’s Tyler Britton sent a pass to Thomas Darnell cutting through the lane to even the score at 19-19. Over the next 13:26 of game time the Buffaloes outscored the Huskies 22-3 and effectively put the game out of reach.
“That run was about defensive intensity,” Tolliver said. “We weren’t getting through screens and our guards weren’t switching. Once we started doing those things the run got started. We were able to get a few steals and those led to layups.”
Tytus Shelton got the run started with a pair of layups, and the lead reached double digits at 30-19 after Ayden Lamons and Luck Heck each turned offensive rebounds into points.
On the next possession Lamons drained a turnaround jumper from the lane to give the Buffaloes their biggest lead of the first half at 32-19.
North Greene’s Britton finished the first half with a triple from the right wing to break the 13-0 run, and close the gap to 32-22.
It took over two and a half minutes for West Greene to score in the third quarter, but a tremendous effort on the defensive end forced turnovers and led to rebounds while not allowing a field goal in the period.
Shelton scored the first three points of the second half and finished the night with a game-high 17 points.
“Tytus is a unicorn. I was hoping he would get up and dunk one, he had a chance in the fourth. He’s a great kid and a hard worker, and tonight was just a testament to his hard work,” Tolliver said.
Josiah Dawson knocked down a three-pointer and Elijah Williams put in four points for the Buffs as they took a 43-26 lead into the fourth quarter.
All North Greene could get to fall in the period were four free throws from Jaiden Bailey.
In the fourth quarter the Huskies were able to get shots to fall again, but they could not get the stops they needed to put a dent in the Buffaloes’ lead.
Bailey drove into the paint for a trio of layups for the Huskies, but West Greene got four points each from Lamons, Shelton and Williams on the way to the 55-38 win.
Thursday’s action started with North Greene getting three-pointers from Havoc Fair and Bailey before Isaac Gaby tapped one off the glass for an 8-3 lead.
West Greene followed with eight straight points and went in front when Lamons dropped in a jumper from the wing.
North Greene closed the period with a pair of triples from Gaby and Britton to take a 14-13 lead.
West Greene used a balanced attack on Thursday. In addition to Shelton’s 17 points, Williams put in 15 while Lamons had 14 points and six assists.
Bailey led North Greene with 13 points.
West Greene will be back in action on Friday against David Crocket, and the Huskies will hit the floor again on Saturday against South Greene.
