North Greene 59, Chuckey-Doak 31
North Greene began Monday’s action with a 59-31 win defeating county counterpart Chuckey-Doak.
The Lady Huskies familiarity with the Lady Knights paid dividends. North Greene was able to jump out in front 18-5 after the first and never looked back. They outscored Chuckey-Doak 19-7 in the third for another back-breaking quarter.
Eva Leonard led all scorers with 14 points and shot 4-for-9 from three-point land. Josie Graham nearly had a double-double with 13 points and 9 rebounds. Jayden Myers led the Lady Knights with 12 points.
North Greene will play Tennessee High on Wednesday at 9:30 AM. Chuckey-Doak will finish up with Cherokee on Tuesday at 9:00 AM.
Alcoa 71, Gaffey, SC 65
Alcoa gained their second win of the week with a 71-65 victory against Gaffney.
The Tornadoes led 28-17 after one and looked as if they may run away with it. Gaffney managed to outscore Alcoa 23-15 in the third and went into the fourth only down one. Gaffney held a 65-62 lead late, but the Lady Tornadoes scored nine-straight in the final 2:34 to pull out the win.
Freshman Harper Stinnett led Alcoa with 24 points on 9-for-15 shooting with a 4-for-8 day from beyond the arc. Stinnett also led with 6 rebounds. Shiriah Harris led Gaffney with 24 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. Tianah Hopper finished with 14 points, 7 rebounds, 7 blocks, and 4 steals.
Alcoa will play Cocke County on Tuesday at 3:00 PM. Gaffney will play JL Mann at 12:00 PM on Tuesday.
Coalfield 62, North Hardin, KY 56
Coalfield survived a late comeback attempt from North Hardin and pulled away at the end, winning 62-56.
The momentum swung back and forth each quarter until the end. Coalfield led by three after the first, North Hardin led by one at the half, and then extended their lead by two at the end of three. Coalfield had their best scoring quarter of the game in the fourth and held North Hardin to their lowest.
Lily Wright was doing everything for Coalfield led them with 26 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. Alanah Dubose scored 22 for North Hardin.
Coalfield will play Spring Valley on Tuesday at 1:30 PM. North Hardin will play Morristown West at 10:30 AM on Tuesday.
Cocke County 62, JL Mann, SC 51
Cocke County managed to distance themselves from JL Mann at the end and carried out a 62-51 win.
Cocke County led by as much as 19 in the third quarter, but JL Mann ended the period on a 23-11 run to cut it to eight heading into the fourth. The Lady Red did enough in the fourth to hold them off.
Karmine Carmichael led all scorers with 21 points on a very efficient 9-for-12 clip. Carmichael hauled in a game-high 14 rebounds for a double-double. Jade Hailstock led JL Mann with 16 points and 6 rebounds.
Cocke County will match up with Alcoa at 3:00 PM on Tuesday. JL Mann and Gaffney will meet at 12:00 PM on Tuesday.
Spring Valley, WV 71, Morristown West 70
Spring Valley and Morristown West played an exciting game that saw Spring Valley hold on and defeat West 71-70.
Morristown West held a late lead in the fourth before Spring Valley erased a late 7-point deficit and held on to win. The Lady Trojans had a shot to win at the buzzer down one but missed. The score was tied after each quarter, 17-17, 36-36, and 53-53. West began the fourth on a 9-2 run before Spring Valley finished on a 16-8 run to finish on top.
Sophie Hutchinson led all scorers with a game-high 28 points. Hutchinson also finished with 5 rebounds, 6 assists, and 7 steals. Brooklyn Ellis finished with 20 points and 9 rebounds. Jhaniya Mitchell scored 22 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, and blocked 4 shots for Morristown West.
Spring Valley will play Coalfield on Tuesday at 1:30 PM. Morristown West will play North Hardin at 10:30 AM on Tuesday.
Bearden 85, Greeneville 57
Greeneville couldn’t avenge the earlier loss to Bearden and suffered another defeat to the Lady Bulldogs, 85-57.
The Lady Devils never got their footing and were fighting from behind all game. Bearden led 26-14 after the first and won every single quarter down the stretch on their way to a victory.
Natalya Hodge led the day and the game with 31 points. Hodge finished with 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals also. Emma Rainey scored 23 points. Brylee Tullock and Maria Lyde each scored 16 for Greeneville. Tullock had 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double.
Bearden advanced to the semis to play Knox County counterpart Grace Christian on Tuesday at 7:30. Greeneville will host Albertville on Tuesday at 4:30.
Upperman 54, Farmington, AR 51
Upperman and Farmington had the game of the day and played a barnburner in Game 20. The Lady Bees upset Farmington, 54-51, and advanced to the semifinals.
Many people were in attendance to watch sophomore Easton McCollough play but witnessed Upperman control the game nearly from start to finish and take down the team many viewed as a favorite. Farmington tied it on multiple occasions, but only held one one-point lead all game.
Upperman led by six and looked to have the game put away before a turnover and an unbelievable shot by McCollough cut the margin to two with seconds remaining. Upperman made 1-of-2 at the line and set up an exciting finish. Upperman Head Coach Dana McWilliams made the risky decision to triple team McCollough on the final play of the game and it worked in her favor. Farmington was forced to put it in the hands of another player and the game-tying shot attempt was off the mark.
Taylor Dolente scored 16 points for Upperman and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Easton McCollough led the game with 25 points on an efficient 9-for-13 night with 4 assists and 5 steals. McCollough shot a mind-blowing 7-for-10 from three-point land.
Upperman advanced to Tuesday’s semifinals and play Daniel Boone at 9:00 PM. Farmington plays Webb at 6:00 PM on Tuesday in the loser’s bracket.
Grace Christian 55, Albertville, AL 50
Grace Christian won a tightly-contested matchup with Albertville and came out on top with a 55-50 win.
The largest lead Grace Christian ever gained was nine as they could never seem to put Albertville away. With the win, the Lady Rams advance into tomorrow’s semifinals.
Abby Roberts led all scorers with a game-high 27 points to lead the way for Grace Christian. Freshman Whitley Booker led Albertville with 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting.
Grace Christian will square off against Bearden at 7:30 PM on Tuesday in the other semifinal game. Albertville will play the hometown Greeneville Lady Devils on Tuesday at 4:30 PM.
Daniel Boone 73, Knox Webb 57
Daniel Boone played maybe their best game all season and looked tremendous in a 73-57 win upsetting many people’s favorite in Knox Webb.
The Lady Blazers showed why they are one of the top teams in the state of Tennessee. Boone’s trio of Aaliyah Story, Andrea Flores, and Laney Britton all scored 20+ points in a rare feat.
Story had one of the best single-game performances in recent memory and is putting on one of the best tournament runs in the 36-year history. Today’s near triple-double featured 21 points, 17 rebounds, 9 blocks, and 4 assists. Story has tallied 34 rebounds and 14 blocks in the tournament so far. The records for most rebounds and blocks in a single tournament are well in reach as the records stand at 61 rebounds and 27 blocks in a single year. Story is averaging 21 points, 17 rebounds, and 7 blocks through both games so far.
Andrea Flores scored 20+ for the second-consecutive game and grabbed 7 rebounds and dished out 6 assists. Laney Britton led the way with a game-high 22 points though. Webb’s Meeyah Green had a terrific game and led her squad in four different categories and had 16 points, 15 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals.
Boone will play Upperman in the semifinals in the main event on Tuesday at 9:00 PM. Webb fell to the loser’s bracket and will play Farmington at 6:00 on Tuesday.
