South Greene is better at softball than Happy Valley and that was made evident on Tuesday night when the Lady Rebels made quick work of their Carter County counterparts in a 17-2 win.
“This is a big conference win for us. The girls hit the ball well tonight,” South Greene coach Amy Hawk said. “We had a tough night last night at North Greene and it was nice to see the girls bounce back and start strong tonight. They played much better tonight and got an important win.”
With the win South Greene improves to 9-4 and 6-1 in District 1-2A play.
The Lady Rebels’ offense swatted the ball all over the park on Tuesday and got 16 hits from nine different players while 10 players reached base safely. Five of those hits went for extra bases.
“We came out and started strong. It was good to see a lot of girls put the bat on the ball. Even girls that came off the bench came in and hit the ball,” Hawk said.
The Lady Warriors were able to strike first on Tuesday and scored one run in the top of the first inning. Addison Moore put a triple into right field and scored when the throw to catch her at third missed its target.
South Greene quickly made that run a distant memory by scoring 12 in the home half of the inning to firmly take control of the contest.
Three at bats into the inning South Greene took the lead when Paisley Brobeck popped one up over first base that the second baseman could not handle. As the ball bounced to the barrier Whitney Reaves and Kortnei Bailey both scored and the Lady Rebels played from in front for the rest if the evening.
South Greene was just getting warmed up and Hailey Williamson, Nevaeh Davis Macy Roberts and Regan Arrowood all launched line drives into centerfield that stretched the lead to 7-1.
Bailey stepped in the box again and pushed across two more runs when she fired a shot past the shortstop. Brobeck made it 10-1 when she banged a double off the fence in centerfield.
Williamson and Davis each sent singles through the left side of the infield that were mishandled in the grass, allowing the final two runs of the side to score for a 12-1 lead after one inning play.
South Greene started the second inning with a pair of big hits. First Reaves lofted a double into left field. Bailey then slammed one to the left-center gap and over the fence for a two-run home run that stretched the lead to 14-1.
Brobeck followed that up with a double, but she was thrown out trying to steal third. Williamson earned her third hit of the night and scored from first when Davis hit into an infield error. Davis advanced to third on the play and scored when Asjalond Parton sent a line drive to left field to make it 16-1.
Happy Valley produced three hits in the third inning and pushed across one more run. Tierra Collins knocked in Alex Moore on a shot to centerfield.
The Lady Rebels needed just four pitches to end the game by run rule in the bottom of the third inning. Arrowood led off the side with a double to deep left field. She scored when Haylee Bird sent a single up the middle.
Bailey led South Greene’s offense by going 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs. Brobeck was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Williamson went 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Reaves was 2-for-2 with a double and three runs scored. Arrowood was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Davis was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Bailey earned the win on the rubber. In three innings she struck out one, walked two and allowed four hits.
