BANNER ELK, N.C. — A goal early in the second half gave Lees-McRae College a 1-0 victory over Tusculum University in non-conference men’s soccer Wednesday night at Tate Field.
Owen Smith scored off a corner kick in the 49th minute as the Bobcats (8-0-2) posted their sixth shutout in as many home matches and third in a row overall.
The Pioneers (1-5-1) were outshot 12-8 in the match and received four saves in goal from Gavin Roux. Jonathan Kienle had five saves for the Bobcats.
Smith’s goal came at 48:03 when he headed home a pass from Andrea Marrazzo after the initial corner kick was played back to Marrazzo.
Tusculum had eight corner kicks in the match to six for Lees-McRae, while the Pioneers were called for 12 fouls and the Bobcats 10.
The Pioneers will face ninth-ranked Anderson on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. The Trojans are 6-0-3 overall and 2-0-2 in South Atlantic Conference play following a 2-2 draw at Wingate on Saturday.
