EMORY, Va. — Tusculum University set a program single-game record for goals as the Pioneers rolled past Emory & Henry College 24-3 in South Atlantic Conference women’s lacrosse on Saturday afternoon.

Ten different players scored goals for the Pioneers (5-10, 3-6 SAC), led by four goals from Cassidy Bourne and three goals apiece from Kylie Marek, Zuza Stasiak and Liberty Jones. Lucy Brewer, Paetyn Hoffmann, Kira Spaulding and Jessie Carolin-Vandenberg each scored two goals, and Mackenzie Sherrod scored one goal for the Pioneers.

The 24 goals for the Pioneers broke the program single-game record of 23 goals set against Chowan on Feb. 28, 2015 and matched against Converse on Feb. 20, 2016 and again against Converse on March 15, 2022. The Pioneers led 16-2 at halftime and tacked on four goals apiece in the third and fourth quarters, while outshooting the Wasps (1-15, 0-9 SAC) by a 33-9 margin.

Justyce Jones scored two goals for Emory & Henry and Mina Hicks had a goal and an assists for the Wasps, who were overwhelmed on draws by the Pioneers by a 23-3 margin. Brewer tied her career high with 11 draw controls for the Pioneers and added four assists along with her two goals.

Tusculum led 3-0 after 2 1/2 minutes and scored the first six goals of the game, including two from Stasiak, before Jones got the Wasps on the board with 2:34 left in the opening quarter. A goal from Marek with one second left in the first quarter triggered a 7-0 run by the Pioneers that saw Tusculum go up 13-1 on a Miller goal with 9:46 left in the second quarter.

The Pioneers, who led 16-1 at halftime, received two goals from Spaulding in the third quarter and one each from Bourne, Miller, Carolin-Vandenberg and Sherrod in the fourth quarter, with the final goal coming with exactly seven minutes to play.

In addition to her 11 draw controls, Brewer had four ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Pioneers. Stasiak added four draw controls and three caused turnovers, while Jones and Carolin-Vanderberg each had three ground balls for Tusculum.

Tusculum went 5-for-7 on free-position shots and was 10-for-12 on clears, while Emory & Henry was 0-for-3 on free-position attempts and 9-for-15 on clears. Tusculum also held a 23-12 ground ball advantage over Emory & Henry.

The Pioneers used three goalies in the match, as Emily White started and made three saves in the first half, followed by Mackie McCotter in the third quarter and Riley Vergano in the fourth quarter. Madison Rossi-Dupas played the entire game for the Wasps and finished with seven saves.

Tusculum will close its regular season on Wednesday, April 17 at UVA Wise, beginning at 3 p.m. The Cavaliers won 16-11 at Catawba on Saturday to improve to 8-7 overall and 5-4 in the SAC.
