Greeneville 54 – Tennessee High 7
Greeneville opened the 2024 season in front of a good crowd at Burley Stadium and came away with an impressive 54-7 win over Tennessee High. Senior, Carson Quillen, and junior, Caden Baugh, both had stellar performances on the evening, accounting for 6 of the 8 Greene Devil touchdowns.
The first scoring opportunity came as the Greene Devils took the opening kickoff and marched 5 plays and found paydirt when Quillen carried it in from 3 yards out. Samuel Gourley’s extra point made the score 7-0 with 10:10 showing on the clock. Just under a minute later, Quillen found the endzone once again with a 7-yard scamper, making the score 14-0.
Baugh was next to get into the scoring action with a 1-yard run (at the 5:10 mark of the 1st quarter), and then tossing his first TD pass of the season, a 28-yard strike to Quillen making the score 28-0 with 4:48 to play in the first. The scoring in the first quarter ended with only 43 seconds showing on the clock when Baugh got his second rushing touchdown of the game, this time from 20-yards out. Gourley’s PAT made the score 33-0.
The second quarter slowed down quite considerably. The Vikings controlled most of the quarter for their first scoring opportunity, going 80-yards in 14 plays, ending with a Jack Richardson 8-yards run and a Noah Broglio PAT, cutting the Greene Devil advantage to 33-7 with 6:22 remaining in the half. The Greene Devils quickly responded and went up 40-7 when Baugh broke loose for a 56-yard dash to the end-zone, his third of the evening.
With the clock continuously running in the second half, the Greene Devils were able to tack on two more scoring opportunities, a 56-yard fumble recovery by CJ Reyes and a 5-yard plunge from Kaine Ricker.
The Greene Devils finished the game with 313 yards of total offense on the evening. Baugh accounted for 265 of those, throwing for 118 yards on 7 of 10 attempts and rushing 9 times for 147 yards.
David Crockett 20 – South Greene 13
South Greene opened their season taking on David Crockett in Jonesboro, falling 20-13 in a close one.
The Rebels struck first on a Nash Rader 5-yard run, before seeing the Pioneers break the ice with a 38-yard Dawson Callahan field goal to make the score 7-3. Rader finished the game with 155 yards on the ground on 22 carries.
The second quarter started with the Rebels, Tripp Neas, scampering 22 yards to make the score 13-3, after a missed PAT. The Pioneers responded with a 16-yard touchdown run from Zeke Slone, before tying the game up on a 26-yard Callahan field goal, on the last play of the half.
Both teams’ defenses stood strong in the second half, but it was the Pioneers final breaking through to take the lead, and eventual win, when AJ Wynn found Lamarkus Dunn for a 45-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
Chuckey Doak 71 – Unaka 46
If there’s any truth to the old addige “Offense sells tickets”, then there must have been a capacity crowd at Stoney Creek catching the Chuckey Doak and Unaka football game. Both teams combined for 117 points on the evening and provided plenty of firepower that saw the Black Knights prevail 71-46.
The Black Knights scored 9 touchdowns, 8 extra points, and even tack on a field goal to cover most of the offensive opportunities. Hayden Roper was the top performer that provided plenty of quick strikes that accumulated an abundance of yardage. He was able to find the end-zone 6 times on the evening.
The Black Knights held a 21-16 lead after the first quarter and then extended it to 45-22 headed to the half. The Rangers were able to cut the score to 45-32 after some miscommunications and turnovers on the Black Knights, but were not able to get any closer as the visitors made the trip back to Green County with the win.
West Greene 32 – North Greene 16
The temperatures on Friday night didn’t seem ideal for a setting on the Tundra, but the amount of excitement that was in the air proved to be what any football fan could have imagined as West Greene slipped away with a 32-16 win over North Greene.
The Huskies jumped out to an early lead when Braydon Weems received the opening kick-off from his teammate, Jake Duffy, and raced 80 yards to the end zone. After a failed PAT, the score remained 6-0.
Following two consecutive turnovers, one by each team, the Buffaloes fumbled into their own end zone and was able to fall on it, resulting in a safety and an 8-0 lead for the Huskies. Problems continued to seem to loom over the Buffaloes head as the ensuing free kick landed out of bounds, giving the Huskies good field possession for their next drive. Quarterback Thomas Darnell was able to find Duffy for a 15-yard touchdown and after the two-point conversion, the Huskies stretched the advantage out to 16-0 and seemed to be in control of the contest.
From that moment on, the Buffaloes would seem to flip the switch and score 32 unanswered points (16 in the remaining portion of the first half and 16 in the second). Austin Franklin got the Buffaloes on the board first with a 5-yard run and then he was able to hook up with Brayden McCamey for the two point conversion, making the score 16-8.
The Buffs took advantage of a Husky turnover late in the first half when McCamey was able to punch it in from a direct snap. Following Franklin’s two-point conversion, both teams would head to the locker room knotted at 16 each.
The final two scores came in the fourth quarter as Franklin snuck in from 12 yards out, followed by Dillon Teston finding the end zone from 13 yards out.
The Buffaloes were able to accumulate 300 yards on the ground, with 164 of those coming from Franklin, while they were able to hold the Huskies to 115 total yards.
