CHURCH HILL – The Greeneville boys wasted no time proving why they earned the number one seed in the District 2-3A tournament, delivering a commanding performance that left no doubt about their championship aspirations after a 68-41 win over Volunteer.
The Greene Devils came out firing on all cylinders, launching a barrage of three-pointers in the opening minutes to establish a dominant 14-2 lead. While their offense stole the show early, it was their tenacious defense that truly set the tone. Volunteer struggled to find any rhythm, unable to penetrate Greeneville’s defensive wall. The Falcons were completely stifled, turning the ball over seven times in the first quarter—each giveaway swiftly converted into points by the relentless Greene Devils.
Greeneville’s offensive firepower was well-distributed, but their sharpshooting from beyond the arc was particularly lethal. By the end of the first quarter, they held a commanding 22-6 lead, having limited Volunteer to just two field goals in the period under suffocating defensive pressure.
The Falcons attempted to mount a response early in the second quarter, stringing together a 4-0 run to cut the deficit to 12 points. Capitalizing on a brief stretch of turnovers by Greeneville’s bench unit, Volunteer closed the gap to 10. However, Trey Thompson swiftly halted their momentum with a strong drive to the basket, reigniting Greeneville’s offensive charge.
The game’s tempo slowed midway through the second quarter as both teams traded fouls and turnovers. But in the final minutes before halftime, the Greene Devils surged once more, widening the gap to 31-16. Despite some controversial foul calls against them, Greeneville stayed composed, and Zaydyn Anderson punctuated the first half with a stunning buzzer-beater, sending the Devils into the locker room with a commanding 36-18 advantage.
Volunteer opened the third quarter with an energetic five-point burst, briefly igniting the home crowd. Their excitement was short-lived, however, as Thompson silenced the gym with an emphatic, rim-rattling dunk, pushing Greeneville’s lead to 42-23. The Falcons continued to struggle with turnovers and were unable to capitalize on Greeneville’s occasional mistakes.
Though the offensive fireworks of the first half had slowed to a steadier pace, Greeneville’s defensive dominance remained intact. Volunteer attempted to generate points from beyond the arc but found little success. Anderson once again showcased his clutch play, sinking a floater at the buzzer to end the third quarter with Greeneville firmly in control at 52-27.
Any hopes of a Volunteer comeback were quickly extinguished in the final quarter. Midway through the period, Greeneville maintained a comfortable 55-31 advantage. The quarter saw fewer turnovers, but neither team was able to establish a consistent scoring run. With the outcome all but decided, Yordan Mills drilled a deep three-pointer, effectively sealing the Falcons’ fate. Greeneville’s reserves took the court with three minutes remaining, and despite a late push from Volunteer, the Devils cruised to an emphatic 68-41 victory.
The win propels Greeneville into the District 2-3A championship game on Monday, where they will look to continue their dominant run.
Anderson and Thompson led the way with 14 points each, while Isaac McGill contributed 11. Thompson also led the team with eight rebounds, reinforcing his presence on both ends of the floor.
The Greene Devils will be back in action on Tuesday at 7:30 against Grainger in the district championship game.
GIRLS
GREENEVILLE 48, CHEROKEE 28
The Greeneville Lady Devils entered Saturday’s District 2-3A semifinal as the overwhelming favorite against the Cherokee Lady Chiefs. But for a brief moment, Cherokee embraced the underdog role, showing early resilience with strong defense and rebounding. The Lady Chiefs even held a 4-2 lead midway through the first quarter, making it clear they weren’t backing down without a fight, but ultimately Greeneville proved to be too much and claimed a 48-28 win.
It didn’t take long for Greeneville to shake off the early jitters and flex their championship pedigree. Maria Lyde took control in the paint, while Kyla Jobe and Matea Gray sparked the offense. More importantly, the Lady Devils clamped down defensively, holding Cherokee to just nine first-quarter points and heading into the second with a 14-9 advantage.
From there, Greeneville turned up the heat. The Lady Devils’ defensive pressure suffocated Cherokee’s offense, forcing turnovers on the Chiefs’ first four possessions of the second quarter. Greeneville capitalized, turning defense into offense and stretching their lead. By the midway point of the quarter, Gray drilled a deep three-pointer, pushing the Lady Devils into double-digit territory at 19-9.
Lyde continued to dominate inside, battling for rebounds and finishing strong at the rim. Cherokee finally broke its second-quarter scoring drought with three minutes left, closing the gap to 21-11, but the momentum was short-lived. Greeneville immediately responded with another three-pointer, extinguishing any hopes of a rally. The Lady Devils closed the half in commanding fashion, heading to the locker room with a comfortable 28-13 lead.
The second half was more of the same, Greeneville in full control. Lyde and Jobe powered an 8-0 run to start the third quarter, while the Lady Chiefs struggled to penetrate Greeneville’s suffocating defense. Cherokee remained scoreless for the first four minutes of the half before finally finding the net, but by then, the damage was done. The Lady Devils extended their lead to 37-18, effectively putting the game out of reach.
Abby Adkins played a key role in preserving Greeneville’s dominance, grabbing five offensive rebounds on consecutive possessions, allowing the Lady Devils to milk the clock while keeping the pressure on. By the end of the third quarter, Greeneville had ballooned its lead to 42-18, leaving little doubt about the outcome.
With a comfortable lead heading into the final period, the Lady Devils focused on closing out the game. Lyde opened the fourth quarter with a three-point play before Cherokee responded with a brief 5-0 run. But as they had all night, Greeneville quickly snuffed out any momentum. Lyde continued her scoring assault, helping push the lead to 48-28 with under three minutes remaining, as the Lady Devils coasted to a dominant semifinal victory.
With the win, Greeneville advances to the District 2-3A Championship on Monday, where they will face Grainger.
Lyde led all scorers with an impressive 22 points, while Julia Woolsey chipped in 7. Jobe had an all-around strong performance with 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists.
