CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Appalachian League announced that Greeneville Flyboys left-hander Freddy Beruvides has been named Pitcher of the Month for July.
The 20-year-old was dominant throughout the month, not allowing a single run over four appearances — including three starts — en route to earning the honor. Beruvides posted a 1-0 record with a 0.00 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, and held opposing hitters to a .106 batting average across 14.2 innings pitched. He surrendered just five hits, walked seven, and struck out 18 batters. He led all Appalachian League pitchers in WHIP and opponent batting average, and was tied for first in ERA during the month.
Beruvides delivered two quality starts in July. On July 10 in Danville, he struck out eight and retired the first eight batters he faced in a six-inning shutout against the Otterbots, allowing just two hits and one walk. Six days later, on July 16, he tossed another six scoreless innings against Kingsport, giving up only two hits while striking out seven and walking two.
He also represented Greeneville as a member of the Appalachian League Select Team in the July 4 exhibition against USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team Prospects, where he pitched a scoreless second inning and allowed just one hit.
Beruvides concluded the season with a 1-0 record and 0.83 ERA across seven appearances (four starts) for the Flyboys. He totaled 29 strikeouts in 21.2 innings while holding opponents to a .173 average.
A native of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Beruvides recently completed his sophomore season at Chipola College (Fla.), where he made 14 appearances (10 starts), striking out 57 batters in 47.1 innings. He is committed to continue his academic and athletic career at the University of Pittsburgh this fall.
