The Chuckey-Doak volleyball team picked up a pair of 2-0 wins on Monday evening at West Greene in a tri-match against the Lady Buffaloes and Northview Academy.
The Lady Black Knights defeated West Greene 25-15, 27-15 and then defeated Northview 25-18, 25-18. The day ended with Northview beating West Greene 2-1, 25-17, 15-25, 25-7.
“We played very consistently tonight. We worked hard at keeping our errors low and I’m really proud of how they executed tonight,” Chuckey-Doak coach Marissa Snapp said.
Chuckey-Doak 2, West Greene 0
The day started with Chuckey-Doak using its size on the front row to jump out to a 7-3 lead in the first set against West Greene. Isabelle Karriker scored on two blocks and a tip and Kallie Dobson added a pair of right-side kills.
The lead moved to 10-4 on and ace from Jessie Dayton, and then a series of strong serves from Jacey Taylor really put the Lady Buffaloes in a hole. Taylor got the serve back for the Lady Knights when fired a missile down the right line for a kill. She then served up five aces in a six-serve stretch for a 19-7 lead.
“Her float serve is huge. She jumps up in the air and that serve is just nasty. It’s not just about getting the ace, it’s getting that pass off the 10-foot line and helping our back row out. That is so important.” Snapp said.
In the closing stretch of the 25-15 win Karriker scored on two kills and a block and Taylor added three more kills.
The second set stayed tight, but Chuckey-Doak held the advantage early. The Lady Knights went in front 9-7 after Jayden Myers came up with a kill and a block.
After an ace from Katelyn Begines West Greene tied at 10-10. West Greene briefly took the lead at 16-15 on a backrow kill by Journey Lamons, but errors gave the advantage back to Chuckey-Doak.
A kill from Hayleigh Seidl put the Lady Knights in front 23-20, but West Greene closed the gap again. Lamons tied the set at 24-24 on a tip, and Aleea Aiken made it 25-24 with a right-side kill.
Seidl tied it again on a tip, and Karriker followed with a slam from the middle as Chuckey-Doak finished out the 27-25 win.
“I feel like our mental game has made huge improvements over the last few weeks, and it showed in that second set against West Greene,” Snapp said. “It’s really easy to get in your head when you are missing serves and you lose the lead. But they chose to respond. I’m really happy with how well they mentally checked in in a hard game like that.”
Karriker finished the game with six kills and five blocks. Taylor had five kills, six aces and 11 digs. Seidl landed five kills. Chloe Kirkpatrick had 15 assists and 10 digs.
Chuckey-Doak 2, Northview 0
In the second game of the night the Lady Black Knights jumped out to a 10-2 lead over Northview Academy. Myers dropped in an ace while Karriker, Seidl and Dobson all put down kills.
Taylor followed with two kills to make it 14-6.
The Lady Black Knights kept pushing and Kirkpatrick fooled the defense with a set to the back row. Karriker went up and pushed the defense back and then Taylor tipped the ball to the void to make it 19-9.
Northview found some success with kills from Kinsley Collins and Kinsley Clingner, but Dobson ended the 25-18 win with a quick slam.
The second set started with three blocks from Karriker as Chuckey-Doak jumped in front 7-2.
A tip by Courtney Ellerbe closed the gap to 13-10, but with Chuckey-Doak scored three straight afterward.
Taylor landed a backrow kill to push the advantage to 20-12. In the closing stretch Karriker killed two and finished the 25-18 win with an ace.
Karriker finished the game with eight kills and five blocks. Taylor had seven kills and seven digs. Kirkpatrick had 17 assists and Macy Church had 11 digs.
Northview 2, West Greene 1
In the final game of the night West Greene and Northview traded blows in the first set with five ties on the way to a 12-12 deadlock.
Sparked by two kills from Clingner the Lady Cougars went in front 16-12. Two kills from Ava Parker followed as the lead reached 21-13.
West Greene got a kill from Lamons and a block from Deborah Julian in the late stages, but Northview stayed in front for a 25-17 win.
The second set again went back and forth early, but West Greene gained an 11-10 lead on an ace from Emma Gray.
Kills from Kahlie Edwards, Carleigh Williams and Julian quickly followed and the lead grew to 17-11.
Madi Evans beat the defense with a pair of aces, and Lamons put down a pair of powerful slams for a 22-13 West Greene lead.
Aiken finished the 25-15 West Greene win with an ace that forced a third set.
Errors early by West Greene allowed Northview to claim a 10-3 lead in the third set.
From there the Lady Cougars cruised with the 15-7 win ending on a slam from Lily Stevens.
