Greeneville and Seymour went toe-to-toe Monday evening in volleyball action, but it was the Lady Devils who came away with a three-set sweep.
“It’s always good to get a sweep,” Greeneville coach Sara Aiken said. “Seymour is a good team with a lot of gritty players who play great defense, and we found several things we can work on moving forward in the early part of our season.”
Tied 3–3 in the opening set, Greeneville used several strong service runs to pull away for a 25–16 win. Brynlee Jones, Allison Hayes, Emma Shelton, and Kinley McCaslin—who closed the set with back-to-back aces—provided the spark the Lady Devils needed.
“When you’re serving well, the rest of your game will come together and good things will happen,” Aiken added.
Fresh off a weekend tournament in Knoxville where they went 4–2, Greeneville leaned on that experience in the final two sets. Set two was a battle, featuring 10 ties before the Lady Devils edged out a 26–24 victory.
The Lady Eagles continued to fight in the third, forcing more ties, but Greeneville pulled away late to secure the match with a 25–19 win. Seniors Emma Shelton and Manning Click both credited their team’s weekend competition for giving them the endurance and confidence to finish strong.
The Lady Devils, now 5–4 on the season, won’t have long to celebrate. They return to action Tuesday night at home against District 1-AA foe Elizabethton, with JV starting at 5 p.m. and varsity to follow.
