It might have been easy for there to have been let down at Burley Stadium on Friday night with Greeneville coming off an emotional win over state power Upperman the week before. Instead the Greene Devils started Region 1-4A play in style with a 49-0 with over Northview Academy.
Senior quarterback Caden Baugh said, “Every week we are 0-0 and we are trying to get to 1-0. Always keeping that Greeneville standard.”
Maddox Bishop started the day off for the Greene Devils with a 50-yard touchdown run with 3:24 left in the first quarter. After the PAT was blocked the Greeneville lead stood at 6-0.
On the very next kickoff, the Cougars fumbled and Baugh quickly got the ball down the field and was rewarded with a one yard sneak for a touchdown that pushed the lead to 13-0.
In the second quarter with 11:09 left, Baugh hit Zaydyn Anderson for a 15-yard touchdown pass to extend the Greene Devils lead to 20-0.
Anderson finished the night with six catches for 120 yards and a touchdown.
With 2:48 left in the second quarter Baugh found the end zone again, this time on a 20-yard rush that made the score 27-0.
Right before the first half expired, Baugh found Cole Franklin for a 25-yard touchdown pass with only 34 seconds remaining. The two point conversion was punched in by Bishop to make the halftime lead 35-0.
Greeneville coach Eddie Spradlen said, “We played really good on offense. 35 in the first half, couldn’t be more proud than that.”
Baugh ended his day at halftime going 10-for-10 for 197 yards and two touchdowns. He added four rushes for 38 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
With the mercy rule in effect Kaine Ricker got in on the scoring action with a 16-yard touchdown run with 7:34 left in the third quarter to advance the score to 42-0.
As the Northview offense started to slowly move the ball down the field, Taren Claridy put a stop to it with a 33-yard pick six to set the final margin at 49-0.
The Greene Devils finished the night with 408 yards of total offense, 245 through the air and 163 on the ground. Greeneville’s defense held Northview to 135 yards of total offense and force three turnovers.
Greeneville improves to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. The Greene Devils will be on the road at Seymour next week.
