West Greene is prepared to travel to Maryville on Friday night for another battle with the Eagleton Royals in this week’s matchup.
It will be West Greene’s third all-time matchup in the series and the first non-region game between both programs. For the first two years of Eagleton’s existence, they were in Region 1 with West Greene. They have since moved over to Region 2, but decided to keep one another on their respective schedules and continue the series.
Eagleton has won both games so far between the two teams. The Royals gained their first win as a varsity program at home against the Buffaloes in 2023, 21-18. They visited Mosheim last season and took a 37-15 win back home with them to Maryville.
The Buffaloes and Royals are trending in opposite directions at this time. West Greene is currently on an eight-game losing streak while Eagleton is on a three-game winning streak. Eagleton is 3-1 this season while West Greene sits at 0-4.
For West Greene it’s about cleaning things up and fixing mistakes from previous weeks.
“We’ve got our work cut out for us this week. We’ve got a lot of things to correct and a lot of things to fix. We’ve got a shot if we can fix the mistakes we saw last week,” West Greene head coach Evan Monroe stated.
Eagleton will display many different offensive sets that include their stud tight end Tyson Click
“They love different tight end sets. They’ll move No. 44 around. Sometimes they’ll have two backs, sometimes it’s single back, sometimes it’s three wide receivers and a tight end on the back side, sometimes it’s two wide receivers with a tight end on the front and receiver over here, sometimes it’s doubles with a tight end, sometimes they’ll back him up and let him play sniffer and pull him. So, they do a lot of different offensive things,” Coach Monroe explained.
The Royals offense have not scored less than 20 points in a game this year and are currently averaging 32 points per game through four contests. They have combined for 83 points in their last two games.
On the flip side, the Buffaloes don’t know what defense to expect Eagleton to come out in. The film studies that West Greene has conducted included two teams (Sullivan East and Providence) that run two completely different offenses and stray away from the running game.
“For defense it’s kind of hard to get a feel on how they’ll align to us. I think we’ll end up getting like a 5-2 look. Even a split-four or cover 3 look maybe. It’s hard to tell how teams will line up to us if you don’t have something to reference it to,” Monroe said.
Eagleton has allowed 22.5 points per game in four games.
A note to make about Friday’s game is the potential of it being a playoff preview for both teams.
“This could be a playoff preview game. We could end up seeing them again in week 11 in the playoffs. I don’t really know how their region is gonna end up shaking up. But they have all the makings of being a region champion or finishing pretty high up there. This could be a preview of a playoff game, so it’s a good feeler game for us to see how we stack up against Region 2 opponents,” Coach Monroe explained.
West Greene has struggled to find the end zone so far this season and only average 10.25 points per game. The Buffaloes are giving up 32.5 points per game on defense.
Friday’s game is set for a 7:00 PM kickoff time at Eagleton College & Career Academy in Maryville.
