The Greeneville Middle School soccer team opened postseason play in dominant fashion, rolling past Sullivan Central 9-0 to advance in the district tournament.
The Lady Devils struck quickly when Morgan Cassidy sent a cross into the box in the 4th minute that Andrehina Moreno buried for the early 1-0 lead. Just one minute later, Moreno assisted Madelien Robinson, who extended the lead to 2-0.
Both Moreno and Robinson doubled their tallies in the 18th and 19th minutes, finishing crosses from Tatum Hill and Kyndel Henderson to push Greeneville’s advantage to 4-0. Moments before halftime, Blakley Crum converted a cross from Kyndall Mathes to make it 5-0 heading into the break.
“We had some excellent give-and-go passing down the sideline,” said Coach Rustin Jones. “It was a total team effort to get those girls in position to score early and allow us to rotate and rest players in the second half.”
Defender Trinity Strong opened the second half in style, driving a direct kick from just inside midfield past the keeper for a 6-0 lead in the 37th minute. Three minutes later, Mathes collected a loose ball and slotted it home, stretching the lead to 7-0.
Maddie McGill closed out the scoring with two goals in the 50th and 53rd minutes, finishing assists from Emma Broyles and Mathes to seal the 9-0 victory.
The Lady Devils controlled play from start to finish, outshooting the Cougars 25-1 overall and 18-0 on goal.
With the win, Greeneville advances to face Indian Trail on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Hawks defeated Crockett 6-0 in their opener and previously edged Greeneville 2-1 on a late goal earlier this season. “We had a few starters sit that game,” noted Jones. “With those players back and the improvements we’ve made, we’re hoping to push over the top this time.”
