The North Greene boys basketball team got its season started the right way on Monday night as it took down Cedar View Christian 80-45.
“It’s the first game of the year, and from an effort standpoint I don’t have anything to complain about. There were some first game jitters, but you expect that,” North Greene coach Matt Weems said. “We missed some easy shots and could have been better on offense, but overall it was a good day.”
The win was the Huskies’ first under new head coach Matt Weems, who took over the program in July. Weems is a former standout player for the Huskies who previously coached at North Greene Middle.
“It does make me feel good to get that first win. I told the guys in the locker room that I appreciate them getting me that, but I don’t ever want to make it about me. This is their team,” Weems said.
Monday’s first quarter was spent with the teams trading buckets and North Greene mostly clinging to a small lead.
Cedar View was briefly in front after Kaleb McConnell knocked down a triple to make it 9-8. Jaiden Bailey answered 20 seconds later with a turnaround trey from the right wing and North Greene played from in front for the final 27:46.
In the closing portion of the first quarter Tyler Britton and Bailey both found Thomas Darnell in the paint for layups and North Greene took a 16-12 lead into the second frame.
In the second quarter the Huskies started playing downhill and attacked the rim. Darnell, Kingston Ricker, and Havoc Fair all got through the lane for layups, and then Britton got a runner to drop as North Greene’s advantage grew to 26-16.
Britton kept going with six more points, including a steal he took the other way for a 32-18 lead. Isaac Gaby followed with a three-pointer, and then after two offensive rebounds Britton was able to end the half with a triple that gave North Greene a 38-23 lead.
“I think our focus level just had to improve in the second quarter. We missed several shots right around the rim. Once we settled in and started playing basketball the ball started going in the hole,” Weems said.
Britton’s hot streak continued in the second half as he nailed a trio of triples while scoring 11 points in the third period. Darnell continued to power in points from the block and scored six points in the third quarter.
The quarter closed with North Greene leading 64-38.
Britton had a big start to his senior season as he poured in 24 points to lead all scorers while knocking down four-three pointers. Darnell was also in double figures with 12 points.
“Tyler knows that he has to green light. He has to keep his confidence up because eventually the ball is going to go in the hole,” Weems said. “He will find a way to score. Once he settled in the game started coming to him, and he got really hot in that third quarter.”
North Greene’s lead grew in the final frame as it continued to knock down deep shots. Gaby, Fair and Nathan Tolley all hit from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter.
In total six different North Greene players sank a three-pointer on Monday.
Cedar View was led by McConnell with 16 points and Jeremiah Walker with 14 points.
North Greene will be back in action on Tuesday as it hosts Hancock County.
“We’re going to have to better tomorrow. Hancock County has two or three kids that can really go. They are going to be a tough team, but hopefully we can come back and get another win tomorrow,” Weems said.
