A new-look North Greene girls basketball team spread the ball around on offense and locked down on defense as they started the season with a 71-17 win over Cedar View Christian on Monday.
“I felt like it was good opening night,” North Greene coach James Buchanan said. “We shot the ball fairly well, which is something you always worry about early with first-game jitters. We rebounded fairly well and we shared the ball well. I was pleased to see that we were looking for the right things against their zone. We’re glad it’s basketball season, and we’re glad we got a win.”
The Lady Huskies started the season by putting everyone in the scoring column and putting four players in double figures. Tralyn Southerland led that effort with 13 points, Eva Leonard had 12, Ella Head 10, and Josie Graham 10.
“Everyone got into the scoring column tonight,” Buchanan said. “It’s important for us to be able to get scoring from different girls. When you have good coaches in our county and our conference, they can take away one or two things. But when you have multiple ways you can hurt people it makes it more difficult on the opponent. I think we have multiple kids that are ready to step up if it’s their night.”
On the first possession of the game the Lady Huskies used good ball rotation to set up Leonard for a three-pointer from the corner. From there the lead only grew, and it grew quickly.
North Greene mixed up zone and man defense early in the game, and the pressure they applied completely shut down the Lady Seahawks. Cedar View was held to one field goal attempt and one point in the first quarter.
“I liked the energy we brought early on defense,” Buchanan said. “We were stepping into passing lanes and the pressure seemed to bother them. The girls were reading the right things and it seemed like a group had been playing together for a long time even though we had a lot of new girls out there.”
Southerland scored six consecutive points before Head and Cadie McDevitt both knocked down triples as the lead grew to 15-1.
The quarter closed with Head getting ahead of the defense for a transition layup, before Natalie Foshie took a steal the distance for a 24-1 lead.
Scoring slowed in the second quarter as the Lady Huskies mixed up the rotation more, but the defense still kept applying the pressure to Cedar View.
Addi Dean started the period by taking a layup the length of the floor, and when Graham converted a steal into two points the Lady Huskies were in front 30-1.
Southerland scored the final four points of the first half as the lead grew to 37-2.
Southerland, playing in her first game with North Greene after transferring from Chuckey-Doak in the offseason, made her presence felt immediately as she controlled the paint on Monday night.
“Tralyn can be a force for us,” Buchanan said. “She is a good passer and a good rebounder. She probably didn’t score as well around the basket as she would have liked, but she probably made her two toughest shots of the night. Then she got to the foul line and shot a high percentage there.”
In the second half Cedar View was able to get some offense going and with 7:32 left in the third quarter Keira Lynch made the team’s first field goal.
North Greene was able to run the floor, and after Dean set up Graham and Satine Johnson for transition layups the Lady Huskies led 46-6. The third quarter closed with North Greene leading 56-12.
In the fourth quarter Leonard knocked down a trio of triples for the Lady Huskies and Dean also connected from deep as North Greene claimed a 71-17 win.
The Lady Huskies will be back in action on Tuesday as they host Hancock County. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
