The North Greene girls relied on overwhelming defense on Tuesday night to take down West Greene for the second time in 12 days, 56-31 in Mosheim.

“I thought our effort was out of the roof tonight,” North Greene coach James Buchanan said. “Our kids played really hard, and finally we started forcing some turnovers to create some separation. I have to give my kids a lot of credit, I felt like as the game went on they didn’t fall off much in terms of getting up and down the court. I’m so proud of them for how hard they worked tonight.”

It did take eight minutes for North Greene’s defense to take effect in earnest, but on the offensive end they were productive early. With 5:15 left in the opening frame Tralyn Southerland drained her second triple for a 10-4 lead.

West Greene closed the gap to 15-13 with 24 seconds left when Emily Justis fired in a straight-away trey. The Lady Huskies were not done scoring and just before the buzzer Addi Dean pushed a steal ahead to Cadie McDevitt for a breakaway layup.

The Lady Huskies began to turn the game in the second quarter after the back-and-forth opening frame. Foul trouble already began to mount for the Lady Huskies and they had to back out of their pressing defense, but in the half court they stayed in front of the Lady Buffaloes and gave up nothing easy. In fact, North Greene only allowed three points in the period.

“We finally went back to our regular offense and I think we got more comfortable,” Buchanan said. “Then on defense we had to stop pressing because of foul trouble. But I think we made it hard for them to score on five of us in the half court. We stayed out on their shooters, and we tried to give (Joie Shipley) a little extra attention in the post. It was just about a little more attention to detail on defense.”

West Greene did score first in the second period with Joie Shipley going through a double team for a lay in that closed the gap to 18-15. The Lady Buffaloes then went without a field goal for the final 5:24 of the first half.

Shipley’s presence in the paint kept North Greene from scoring for the first four minutes of the second quarter, but once they figured out how to get to the basket the points started rolling in.

Things got started with Eva Leonard grabbing an offensive rebound and setting up Josie Graham for a lay in. Cadie McDevitt then got inside twice and drew contact before going 4-for-4 at the charity stripe.

Natalie Foshie slashed through the lane and drew contact for three points the hard way, before Leonard finished the half with a triple.

North Greene went into halftime on a 12-1 run while holding a 30-16 lead. They did that with starters Ella Head and Southerland watching much of the first half with foul trouble. Freshman Addi Dean and came off the bench to provided plenty of quality minutes and late in the half Heid Trentham gave the Lady Huskies a boost.

The second half began with West Greene’s Emily Justis getting a runner to fall on the opening possession, but then North Greene scored 10 straight points.

In a 15-second stretch McDevitt made a free throw, Southerland scored on an inbound play under the basket, and then McDevitt stole the ball in the backcourt before turning it into a quick layup. That pushed the Lady Huskies’ lead to 38-18 at the midway point in the quarter.

West Greene’s Sarah Justis finished the period by taking in a pass from Payton Norton and scoring in transition to close the gap to 40-22.

North Greene’s lead reached 46-25 when Leonard swiped the ball at midcourt and Foshie put back her miss.

Reserves took over for mush of the remainder of the final frame and Dean drove to the hoop for four points for the Lady Huskies as they finished with a 60-31 win.

McDevitt led North Greene on Tuesday with 17 points while Southerland scored 14 points.

Norton scored 12 points for West Greene.
