Buffaloes’ Second-Half Push Leads To 60-46 Win Over North Greene

The West Greene boys used a balanced attack on Tuesday night to start a busy week with a rivalry win, 60-46 over North Greene.

“I thought overall we played well tonight,” West Greene coach Allen Tolliver said. “We gave up too many open threes. But when we got back and played defense we looked like a pretty good team. I feel good about holding them to 46. And its always feels good to win a county game, you know these games are never going to be easy.”

The game went to halftime with the Buffaloes holding on to a 28-24 lead, but a strong third quarter allowed them to separate.

That started with Josiah Dawson stealing the ball and pushing it ahead to Tytus Shelton for a fastbreak layup. Shelton’s running the floor was a difference on Tuesday as he continually found himself in front of the defense and he finished with a game-high 20 points.

“Tytus runs the floor and he has high motor. You can always count on him to work hard. If he doesn’t get the rebound he is going to be the first one down the floor. We did a good job of finding on those breaks as well so he could get those layups,” Tolliver said.

West Greene’s lead grew to 35-25 with 4:40 left in the third quarter when Shelton sank a turnaround jumper from the paint.

North Greene was able to find a reprieve when Jaiden Bailey and Isaac Gaby sank three-pointers.

What North Greene was not able to do in the third quarter was score inside. That was largely because of Ayden Lamons overwhelming defensive presence. Lamons only scored six points on Tuesday, but he grabbed 12 rebounds, dished eight assists and was a stopper on the defensive end of the floor.

“Every time Ayden caught the ball he was double teamed, but he finds the open man. I think at one point he accounted for nine straight points and only scored two. He has embraced that role. He is a guy that works the whole night, even when he is catching double teams every time he touches the ball,” Tolliver said.

Two layups by Carter Stills and another from Shelton pushed the lead to 44-31.

North Greene answered with a triple from Bailey, but the Buffaloes led 46-34 entering the final quarter.

“It feels like for a long time West Greene has had a hard time in the third quarter,” Tolliver said. “There were times last year where we had a double-digit lead at halftime and lost it in the third quarter. For these guys to change that mentality and to come out and build the lead in the third quarter is great to see.”

The fourth quarter started with West Greene scoring the first eight points. Shelton drained a couple of midrange jumpers and Lamons put back a miss as the Buffs’ advantage reached 54-33 with 4:55 left to play.

North Greene again got three-pointers from Gaby and Tyler Britton, but the hole was too big to dig out of as they fell 60-46.

The night started with West Greene jumping in front 7-2 after Luke Heck sank a three-pointer from the left wing.

The Huskies were able to cut the lead to 9-7 when Thomas Darnell put back a miss through contact and turned it into three points.

West Greene closed the quarter with five points from Elijah Williams and four from Dawson to take an 18-13 lead.

In the second quarter North Greene began to warm up from three-point land and after Britton, Gaby and Bailey all hit from deep the Huskies took a 24-23 lead with 2:51 left before halftime.

Shelton tied the game with a free throw and then Lamons set him up for a pair of buckets for a 28-24 halftime lead.

In addition to 20 points from Shelton West Greene got 16 points from Williams and 11 from Dawson.

Bailey led North Greene with 14 points while Gaby had 11 and Britton scored 10.

Both teams will be back in action on Wednesday at Cherokee High School in the Big H BBQ Christmas Bash. West Greene will take on Union County at 5:30 p.m. and North Greene will play Cocke County at 7 p.m.
