North Greene pounded out 10 hits, got a strong pitching performance from Isaac Gaby, and played error-free baseball Thursday afternoon to defeat cross-town rival South Greene 9-1, improving to 6-5 on the season.
Huskies coach Jamey Palmer was pleased with his team’s overall performance. “We tried to work on and execute a few things we’ve been focusing on, but we hadn’t been able to,” Palmer said. “Hats off to South Greene. Jason (Ripley) is doing a great job with a young team, and they’re going to be tough to handle in a few years.”
Both teams received solid efforts on the mound, with each starter going the distance. Gaby earned the win, allowing one unearned run on two hits while striking out three, walking four, and hitting two batters.
Colton Fillers took the loss, surrendering nine runs (five earned) on 10 hits while striking out five, walking two, and hitting one.
Christian Cogdill led North Greene at the plate, driving in three runs with a double and two singles. Tyler Britton added two RBIs with a pair of singles, and Colten Suggs chipped in two RBIs with a single. South Greene managed just two hits on the day—a double by Fillers and a single from Tyler Davis.
South Greene took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. William Ricker drew a walk, advanced to third on Fillers’ double, and scored when a throw from right field got away and went into the dugout.
North Greene answered in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on errors to score three unearned runs. RBI singles from Britton and Suggs gave the Huskies a 3-1 advantage.
Britton extended the lead to 4-1 in the third with a two-out RBI single to center.
The Huskies broke the game open in the fourth, scoring four runs. Back-to-back walks by Wyatt Burns and Turner Collins set the tone, and both later scored on a Parker Collins single. Collins then stole second and moved to third when Colton Cutshall reached on a bunt single. Cogdill capped the inning with a two-out double to center, driving in two more runs.
North Greene added an insurance run in the sixth. Gaby singled, stole second, and scored on Cogdill’s single to right.
The two teams will meet again Friday afternoon at South Greene, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00.
