Friday afternoon, surrounded by family and friends, Greeneville senior Addison Phillips made it official. She became just the second Lady Devil to sign a letter of intent to continue both her academic and athletic career on the bowling lanes. Phillips will join the women’s program at Union Commonwealth University, which is coming off a strong national showing after qualifying for the Intercollegiate Team Sectionals.
“I’m glad Coach Doyle is giving me the opportunity to bowl at the collegiate level,” Phillips said. “I enjoyed high school bowling, and now I’m excited for college bowling.”
A four-year member of the Greeneville High School bowling program, Phillips capped her senior season with a 149 average while winning 56 percent of her head-to-head matches. She finished runner-up in Region 1, rolling a 243, and becoming the 13th Lady Devil to qualify for the TSSAA Individual State Tournament. Phillips went on to place 20th at the state tournament — the second-highest individual finish in school history.
She also played a key role in Greeneville’s team success. The Lady Devils finished runner-up in both the district and region tournaments and advanced to the state sectionals, earning a spot among the top 16 teams in Tennessee.
Phillips, who plans to major in Exercise Science, said her decision to attend Union became clear after her campus visit.
“Union wasn’t initially on my radar when I started applying,” she explained. “After visiting other schools, I was encouraged to make the trip to Barbourville and check it out. It felt like home, and I was almost ready to commit the day of my visit.”
Greeneville coach David Painter, a Union alum and former member of the Bulldogs program, praised Phillips’ growth and determination.
“I saw her fire and desire for the sport the first time I watched her bowl,” Painter said. “This is a testament to her work ethic, and I’m very proud of her.”
