Greeneville 9 – Kingsport 8
Greeneville snapped a three-game losing streak Friday night with a thrilling 9-8 victory over league-leading Kingsport at Hunter Wright Stadium.
The Axmen grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning, and the score remained unchanged until the Flyboys erupted for six runs in the sixth. Matthew Kerrigan and Nelson Grajales-Vazquez each belted home runs during the inning as Greeneville surged ahead 6-1.
Kingsport answered immediately, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth to trim the deficit to 6-5.
The Flyboys added an insurance run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to extend their advantage to 9-5.
The Axmen made things tense in their final at-bat, scoring three runs to pull within one and putting the tying run on second base. Bryson Boyd then settled down and retired Trey Jozwiakowski on a fly ball to right field to end the game.
Grajales-Vazquez paced Greeneville’s offense with a home run and a double, while Kerrigan finished with a home run and a single. Deacon Nelson, Amari Jefferson, and Gabe Gray each added a hit in the win.
Dillon Kirksey earned the victory, pitching 5⅔ innings while allowing five runs on eight hits. He struck out six and walked one. Boyd picked up the save, working the final 3⅓ innings and giving up three runs on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
The two teams will wrap up the series Saturday night at Pioneer Park, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. The Flyboys will wear special Davy Crockett-themed jerseys that will be auctioned off following the game to benefit the United Way of Greene County. Fans can also enjoy a postgame fireworks show.
