Greeneville Flyboys 8 – Danville Otterbots 7
Greeneville used the Force early and held off a late charge from Danville to secure an 8-7 victory in the opening game of their three-game series Friday night.
The Flyboys raced out to a 7-1 advantage, building a lead worthy of the Rebel Alliance before fending off the Otterbots who attempted to strike back in the later innings.
Matt Cash, fresh off his sophomore season at Jacksonville State, led Greeneville’s offensive attack with a 3-for-5 performance that included a triple and two singles. Ruben Zuany provided a powerful blast of his own, launching a two-run home run in three plate appearances.
On the mound, Coppin State’s Dillon Kirksey kept Danville’s lineup in check, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out two over four innings. Though he did not factor into the decision, the right-hander helped set the tone for the Flyboys’ victory. Beau Revord earned the win after allowing one run on one hit and striking out three in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Bennett Percival then brought balance to the galaxy in the ninth, striking out two batters to lock down the save.
Greeneville, now 6-6 on the season, will host Danville in Game 2 of the series Saturday night at Eastman Credit Union Field at Pioneer Park for UT Night. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Flyboys will wear their Dark Mode jerseys, which will be auctioned off following the game, with the highest bidders receiving the jerseys. Fans are also encouraged to stay after the game for the first fireworks extravaganza of the season.
