MORRISTOWN – Greeneville was looking for a bounce-back win on Friday night after falling to Class 3A power Alcoa a week ago, and behind a big night from senior running back Carson Quillen the Greene Devils ran by long-time rival Morristown West 42-6
The Greene Devils started the night by throwing an interception, but Greeneville’s defense stood strong and held the Trojans to a field goal. Ezekiel Alvarado’s 33-yard kick was good for an early 3-0 lead.
The Greene Devils offense quickly took the momentum back with a methodical drive that ended on a one-yard Carson Quillen touchdown run with 3:39 left in the first quarter. Greeneville held a 7-3 lead an never looked back.
After the game Greeneville coach Eddie Spradlen said, “I’m proud of how our kids fought and played tonight. We needed a game like this, against a good 5A football team.”
With 1:51 left in the first quarter, Caden Baugh took a different route on how to score, hitting Zayden Anderson for a 45-yard bomb right into the end zone to make the score 14-3.
Quillen stretched the lead again when he took a hand off 69-yards into the end zone to extend the Greene Devils lead to 21-3 with *;36 left in the first half.
Four minutes later Baugh took the option play eight-yards for the Greene Devil score and pushed the lead to 28-3.
Baugh ended his night with 102 yards passing and one touchdown while adding 45 yards on the ground with another touchdown.
As it looked like the clock was going run out on the first half Quillen had other ideas. He broke a handful of tackles and went 31-yards into the end zone to get up to a 35-3 halftime lead. That score made Quillen the fourth highest scorer in Greeneville football history with 342 point, passing former Devils kicker Ben Ogle.
With a running clock in the second half, Quillen would score one more time on a seven-yard run with 2:01 left in the third quarter to push the lead to 42-3.
Quillen ended his night with 169 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Receiving, he had two catches for 51 yards.
The Trojans would get on the board one more time with 2:25 left in the 4th with another field goal, making the final score of 42-6.
Greeneville had 309 yards of total offense on Friday while Morristown West had 178.
Next week Greeneville will be back in region play hosting Volunteer at Burley Stadium.
