STONEY CREEK – High School football’s preseason came to a close on Friday night for Chuckey-Doak, South Greene and West Greene at the Carter County/ Greene County Jamboree held at Unaka High School.
The Black Knights, Buffaloes and Rebels went into Friday’s scrimmage with different goals, and now they are all excited that week one is upon us.
“This was a big night for us heading into a big in-county game next week,” Chuckey-Doak coach Billy Kaylor said. “Now we have to carry some of these things into the season opener. We challenged our team to take a step tonight and improve, and I think we showed that. I’m really happy with how we executed some of our assignment stuff.”
CHUCKEY-DOAK 20, UNAKA 0
In the final period on Friday Chuckey-Doak was dominant on both sides of the ball and used some highlight reel plays to top Unaka 20-0.
The result has Black Knights’ coach Billy Kaylor feeling good as his team heads toward its season opener against North Greene next week.
“This is what you want out of scrimmage,” Kaylor said. “We were crisp. I liked the confidence out of our quarterback. Defensively the pick six is great. We were flying to the football, and overall I’m really pleased with tonight.”
It looked as though the Knights’ opening possession might end without a first down, but on fourth and one Kaylor rolled the dice and decided to see if his team could make a play.
Instead of powering up the middle quarterback Kiptyn Ball took a quick drop and flicked a pass to Dominic Hahnlan on the far sideline. Hahnlen not only did enough to move the chains, but he also outran all of the Rangers for a 61-yard touchdown. For good measure Hahnlen kicked the extra point and gave Chuckey-Doak a 7-0 lead.
Next it was the defense’s time to shine. The Rangers tried to trick Chuckey-Doak with a screen pass, but freshman defensive tackle Gustavo Alvarez was having none of it. The pass fell right into his hands and he rumbled, bumbled and stumbled 30 yards for the big-man touchdown and 14-0 lead.
The Rangers snapped the ball two more times before freshman Avery Parkey jumped on top of a fumble for the Knights.
Ball and crew went to work with Skylar Davis gaining 13 yards on a reception and Cobe Love catching a pass that went for 10 yards. Marcus Britt powered through the middle of the defense for an eight-yard score that set the final Margin at 20-0.
Ball finished the day 3-for-4 passing for 84 yards.
“It’s great to see different guys have success. A lot these guys have experience even though they are young, but when you see success and have experience it can be a big boost to their confidence,” Kaylor said.
CLOUDLAND 6, WEST GREENE 0
West Greene went toe to toe with Cloudland in its one quarter of action, but ultimately the Buffaloes came up short in a 6-0 loss.
“We saw Cloudland two weeks ago, and I feel like we were a much better team this time,” West Greene coach Evan Monroe said. “Our intensity was better, and if not for a holding call this was pretty even ball game. This was a good final tune up before week one. Now we’ll see if we are ready to roll next week.”
The 20-minute continuous clock period started with the Highlanders running nearly 14 minutes off the clock while they marched 70 yards in 15 plays to score the period’s only touchdown.
The drive mostly alternated between runs by Grayson Cole and Bryce Birchfield, but on third and long an 18-yard reception by Walker Gouge extended the drive.
Cole capped the series with a two-yard touchdown plunge, but the Buffaloes were able to keep Gavyn Shell out of the endzone on the two-point try.
When West Greene finally got the ball they saw some positives, but ultimately penalties kept it out of the endzone.
Trystan Banks had a couple of positive carries before Matthew Harral took a counter 13 yards. The Buffaloes thought they evened the score when Kyler Patterson raced 31 yards to the goal line, but a holding call erased the touchdown.
West Greene will travel to Cosby on August 22 for its first regular season contest.
HAMPTON 22, SOUTH GREENE 0
The South Greene football team went into Friday’s action focused on playing everybody and staying healthy for when things really matter next week.
Hampton had no concern about getting its reserves reps and outscored the Rebels 22-0.
South Greene quarterback Nash Rader was held out of the scrimmage and top running back Tripp Neas did not have a carry.
“We knew exactly what we were doing coming in here. Our starters were going to play one series no matter what,” South Greene coach Shawn Jones said. “We can’t have injuries right now. We weren’t going to run between the tackles, but we tried to throw a little bit. We know we have some things to work on, but my focus is making sure we are ready for next week.”
The Rebels did pick up 24 yards when freshman Trent Haynes hit Lucas Couch on reverse pass. Backup quarterback Charlie Lane tried to run twice, but both times the protective whistle of the referees ended the play without him being wrapped up. The starters’ lone drive ended in a punt.
Hampton started the day by relying on the Power I to get into the endzone. Brock Shelby capped the drive with a three-yard touchdown run.
The Bulldogs then used two long touchdown passes to Shelby against the Rebels’ reserve secondary to score a second and third time. As the clock struck zero starting quarterback Connor McKinney lobbed up a 53-yard touchdown pass against South Greene’s backups.
South Greene begins the regular season next week by hosting Morristown East.
South Greene nearly swept the pre-jamboree skill contests. Neas was the fastest back, Rader had the longest throw, and Brant Wilhoit won both the longest punt and longest kick competitions.
