Chuckey-Doak entered Saturday night’s contest against Cloudland with a 2–4 record but seized control early and cruised to a 59–16 victory.
The Black Knights dominated from the opening possession, with Ben Palazzo scoring two quick transition baskets. Gavin Crum followed with a layup, forcing the Highlanders to call a timeout down 6–0 with 6:01 left in the first quarter.
Chuckey-Doak kept the pressure on, building a 10–0 lead before Cloudland finally got on the board with 3:27 remaining in the opening period..
Logan Malone scored five points in the first quarter, while Palazzo, Crum, and Ryland Grindstaff each added four. The Knights closed the quarter with a commanding 23–3 lead. Grindstaff, running the point, also tallied four of the team’s 12 first-half assists, while Dom Atchison dished three.
Coach Sam Broyles praised his team’s fast start and defensive intensity. “That was probably the best we’ve pressed and played man-to-man defense all season,” Broyles said. “I’m not sure how many steals we had tonight, but it allowed us to get out in transition and score some easy buckets.”
Crum and Palazzo continued to lead the charge into the second quarter, scoring five and four points respectively, as the Knights stretched their halftime advantage to 38–6.
“Ben pulled down eight rebounds, and that helped him get going early,” Broyles added. “When he’s rebounding like that, it forces the other team to collapse on him and opens up opportunities for everyone else.”
With the game firmly in hand and the clock running in the second half, play grew a bit sloppy, but the Knights still generated enough offense while giving several players meaningful minutes. Crum finished with a team-high 12 points, while Palazzo and Jake Broyles each added eight. Grindstaff and Cobe Love contributed six apiece.
“We’ll enjoy this one tonight,” Broyles said, “But we’ll have to get back to work as we travel to West Greene on Tuesday and Happy Valley on Friday.”
