On Homecoming night at West Greene it looked as though the Buffaloes might be on the precipice of their first win of 2025, but Providence Academy pulled away late capture a 48-27 win.
“Man, we’re so close, our record doesn’t show how close we are,” West Greene coach Evan Monroe said. “But if you look at Cosby film compared to tonight it’s a night and day difference. We’re close, we just have to keep working and turn that corner.”
The night started off promising for the Buffaloes as they forced the Knights of Providence Academy into a three-and-out on the opening drive. Peyton Hilton burst through the line and blocked the punt, he then scooped up the loose ball and scampered 30 yards into the end zone for the game’s first score. Kendal Caldwell tacked on the extra point and the Buffs were up 7-0 less than two minutes into the game.
It only took 44 seconds for the Knights to tie the score after freshman sensation quarterback Cam Blanton hit three big pass plays, the final one a 20 yard pass to Nash Martinez. Jacoby Puhr added the extra point for the 7-7 tie, and it looked like we were in for an ole fashion barn burner.
After West Greene went three-and-out the Knights were off to the races again. Blanton ran in the touchdown from 12 yards out. Puhr’s extra point made the score 14-7 with 5:30 remaining in the first quarter.
West Greene punted again and Blanton went back to work. An eight-yard scramble and a face mask penalty had the the Knights inside the Buffs’ 30-yard line. Cam Blanton then tossed up a deep pass to Cole Blanton in the end zone for his second touchdown pass of the quarter. Hilton got a hand on the extra point try for his second blocked kick of the game to keep the score at 20-7, with still 2:01 to play in the first quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff Kyler Patterson fielded the ball at his two yard line and raced 98 yards down the near sideline for the touchdown,
Caldwell’s PAT closed the gap to 20-14 and there was still 1:44 yet to play in the first quarter.
The Buffalo defense did their job and forced a turn over on downs near mid field and the fast paced quarter ended with the score 20-14 in favor of the visiting Knights.
Things settled down a bit in the second quarter with the two teams exchanging punts before the Buffs put together a long drive and threatened to take the lead. West Greene had a first and goal situation at the nine yard line. Then on third and goal from the five a bad snap from center sent them back beyond the 20. On fourth and goal and out of field goal range the Buffs were forced to go for it and Austin Brown’s pass in the end zone was batted down.
The Knights then went into the two-minute offense and moved quickly into Buffalo territory. The Blanton to Blanton combination struck again for a 30 yard touchdown pass play. The two-point conversion made the score 28-14 wit just under a minute to play in the half.
On the ensuing kickoff lighting struck for Patterson again. This time he hauled in the kick at the one yard and went 99 yards for a touchdown. Caldwell split the uprights to bring the Buffs back to within seven at 28-21.
The Buffs put together an 81 yard, 12 play drive that took nearly half of the third quarter that ended with a five yard touchdown run from Shawn Bailey. A bad snap kept the PAT from being attempted and the Knights held on to a one point lead at 28-27.
Aiden Thompson then capitalized on one of the few mistakes Blanton made when he intercepted a pass over the middle to end the Knights’ drive and give the Buffs some momentum. The third quarter ended with West Greene on the move but a holding penalty forced them to punt.
Then just when it looked like the Buffs were going to make a stand on third and long Blanton hit his big tight end, Roman Damron, across the middle for 60 yard touchdown. The PAT gave the Knights an eight point cushion at 35-27.
Not taking any chances this time, Puhr’s kick sailed through the end zone for a touchback and the Buffs setup shop at the 20 yard line. The Buffs needing a touchdown and 2-point conversion to tie got the drive started with a 12 yard run from Tristan Banks but a holding penalty helped stall the drive and forced them into another punt.
After the punt it was the combination of Blanton to Blanton for the third time of the night for a 54 yard scoring strike. Hilton broke through the line once again to block his third kick of the evening, but the damage had already been done with score at 41-27.
The Buffs had slim hopes trailing by 14 and had to go for a fourth and long that was unsuccessful. Blanton added another score on the ground for a final score of 48-27.
Banks led the Buffs’ ground attack with 157 yards and 17 carries. Hilton had a big game with three blocked kicks, a scoop-and-score touchdown, a pass breakup and a sack. Patterson had two kickoff returns for touchdowns of 98 and 99 yards respectively.
Cam Blanton had a huge night for the Knights, passing for 337 on 23 attempts and five TD’s, he added another 85 on the ground and two more scores. Cole Blanton hauled in six passes for 164 yards and three touchdowns.
Before the game Brooklyn Desosier was crowned Homecoming Queen.
