Greene Devils Cruise Past Seymour For Region Win

SEYMOUR – The Greeneville football started fast on Friday night and then cruised to a 49-6 win over Region 1-4A Seymour while improving to 4-0 on the year.

It was not flashy, and coach Eddie Spradlen would have liked for the score to get out of hand a little earlier, but the Greene Devils had plenty of bright spots. Caden Baugh threw three touchdown passes, two went to Zaydyn Anderson who had 96 receiving yards and was not tackled on Friday night. Maddox Bishop ran into the endzone twice, and Greeneville’s defense forced three turnovers while keeping the Eagles out of the endzone.

“That is a much improved Seymour team. They played really hard and we were flat, and that let them stay in the game,” Greeneville coach Eddie Spradlen said. “We were able to do the things that we want to do on offense. I was glad to see that we could line up and just run the football in the second half. But I think we got a little complacent. It was 21-0 really quick and it felt like it took the life out of us instead of them. Overall I’m proud of the effort, but we have to continue to improve.”

It took one snap for Anderson to make his presence felt as the burner quickly found himself behind the secondary for a 40-yard gain on the first play from scrimmage. He could not stay inbounds while tip-toeing the sideline, but Greeneville was set up on the 15-yard line.

It took six plays, but the Greene Devils got into the endzone when Baugh sprinted to his right and fired a dart to Cole Franklin in the flat for an eight-yard score. Samuel Gourley’s extra point went through the uprights and less than three minutes into the game the Devils were up 7-0.

Seymour’s first drive went backward and after a good punt return by Anderson the Devils were only 30 yards from their endzone. Anderson took in a short pass from Baugh and smoothly avoided a tackler before trotting up the right boundary to put the Greene Devils on top 14-0 midway through the opening period.

With 3:25 left in the first quarter Greeneville took possession again and marched 50 yards in six plays. Baugh started things by hitting Taren Claridy for a 13-yard gain, and then he kept it himself and gained 18-yards on the ground.

On first and goal the Greene Devils brought the jumbo package onto the field and Bishop powered his way into the endzone for a 21-0 lead with 1:40 still left in the first quarter.

Seymour spent the next 9:55 with ball and almost ran out the rest of the first. The 14-play, 61-yard drive finished with Jackson Kendall nailing a 43-yard field goal to get the Eagles on the board.

Greeneville’s ensuing drive was marred by penalties and led to a punt, but a diving interception by Bishop allowed them one more chance to score before halftime. After a short drive Bishop got to finish things by walking across the goal line untouched from one yard out.

Greeneville went to halftime leading 28-3.

The Eagles were able to mount another scoring drive to start the second half. This one covered 70 yards and finished with Kendall booting a 27-yard field goal.

After six straight run plays Anderson beat the defense again. Baugh lobbed the ball to the pylon and the University of Tennessee commitment ran under it for a 37-yard touchdown that stretched the lead to 35-6.

“We probably could have thrown it to (Anderson) on every play and he would have made a big play. He had a good day.” Spradlen said.

Anderson finished the day with three catches for 96 yards and two touchdowns. Baugh was 9-of-14 passing for 151 yards and three touchdowns. He added 69 yards on the ground.

On Seymour’s next possession Claridy made the play of the night when he leaped high into the air and with one hand picked Madden Guffey’s pass out of the air.

The interception set up the Devils next score. With 7:22 left in the game Jude Dyer went off tackle to the left and charged across the goal line for a 10-yard touchdown run.

Kaine Ricker then got in on the takeaway action as he picked off a pass and returned it 35 yards down to the two-yard line. Ricker then took over at quarterback and ran into the endzone for the final score of the night.

Greeneville ran for 189 yards on Friday with Bishop picking up 70 yards and scoring two touchdowns. In total Greeneville produced 340 yards of offense.

The Devils’ defense held Seymour to 158 total yards, but the Eagles possessed the ball for nearly 32 of the game’s 48 minutes.

“I’m really excited for where we are at right now, but we have a long way to go,” Spradlen said. “We are still a young football team on defense. We are going to have to rely on the offense to carry us for a little bit, but we are capable of doing some good things.”
