Buffaloes Take Down Happy Valley 61-27 To Start League Play

West Greene picked up their fourth-straight win of the season after a dominant 61-27 victory over Happy Valley to begin conference play 1-0 in December.

“It’s really nice. Last year we started out with a loss in league play and pretty much put ourselves behind the eight ball from the start. It feels good to come out and get that first one under us. Hopefully kind of set the tone with conference play started,” Buffaloes Head Coach Allen Tolliver mentioned.

Just like the girls prior, the boys jumped out to an early first-quarter lead and never let go for a wire-to-wire victory. West Greene improved to 5-2 through seven games this season. Tuesday night began conference play for all District 1-2A teams and the Buffaloes started out on the right foot gaining a win in their opener.

Elijah Williams scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Buffs to victory. Conner Campbell delivered 13 to aid in the win. Williams is the fourth different leading scorer in their four-game winning streak.

“I’m really enjoying the team play. I feel like we share the ball really well. We don’t really care who’s getting the points or getting the glory. As long as we win, we’re happy right now. That’s truly one of the first times I can say that,” Tolliver mentioned.

The game opened up with Williams slashing through the lane unguarded for West Greene’s first two of the contest. Sam Wisecarver laid in a left-handed layup next. Conner Campbell got going with back-to-back layups. Williams splashed his first three from the corner to help the Buffaloes sprint out to an 11-2 lead. Braden McCamey got involved early with a three-point basket. Ayden Lamons scored to help all of West Greene’s starting five score in the first quarter.

West Greene pulled out to a comfortable 22-5 lead at the end of the first eight.

The second quarter was an evenly paced quarter, but still went in the Buffaloes favor. Lamons swatted a shot on defense and Williams quickly assisted Campbell for a layup. Wisecarver was next to secure a layup. Austin Nickels scored four-straight for Happy Valley before Williams hit a layup in transition.

The Warriors scored five-straight from an Austin Stines three and a Artee Bahn pull up. McCamey faked the defense out with a turnaround and Williams got a layup off just before the halftime buzzer sounded.

West Greene went into the break leading 33-14.

The third quarter was another evenly matched quarter, but was still controlled by West Greene. Ayden Lamons ripped down an offensive board and quickly dished it over to Williams for a triple. Lamons’ aggression on the boards led to another offensive rebound and putback for the junior post. Williams downed another three pointer before Alex Johnson scored from the free-throw line. The Warriors could not stop Lamons on the offensive glass as he secured another putback layup.

The Buffs went into the fourth quarter leading 47-23.

They ran away with the fourth quarter and left no doubt by outscoring the Warriors 14-4 in the final eight minutes. Tytus Shelton stepped into the game and scored five points to ice the win.

The Buffaloes went home happy with a 61-27 win to boost their record to 5-2 and start conference play 1-0.

“This group is different. They are well bonded. They get along well. They don’t care who’s scoring,” Coach Tolliver mentioned.

Williams led the game with 17 points. Conner Campbell followed behind with 13.

Lane Parker scored a team-high 10 points for Happy Valley.

West Greene makes the long drive to Johnson County for their next contest on Friday night.
