Mr. Football: Greeneville’s Caden Baugh Receives State’s Top Honor

NASHVILLE – Greeneville quarterback Caden Baugh was all smiles on Tuesday afternoon after he was recognized as the top football player in Class 4A.

Baugh received the Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Award for Class 4A at Nissan Stadium in Nashville during a ceremony that included 30 of the top football players from across the state.

“I feel great right now. It feels great to win this award, but I couldn’t do it without my teammates,” Baugh said. “I’m grateful God gave me the ability to play football. But this is about teamwork. Everybody who pushed me in the offseason and all season is what helped me get this award.”

Baugh becomes the fifth Greene Devil player to be named Mr. Football, and after growing up rooting for some of the best in Greeneville’s history he is grateful to be able to add to the legacy of such a proud program. Dustin Moore was the first winner in 1993.  Greeneville had back-to-back winners with William Carmichael won in 2010 and Terrell Rollins in 2011.  Cade Ballard won the award in back-to-back years in 2017 and 2018.

“It means everything to win this award. I’ve been around Greeneville football ever since I was born. I was born into this,” Baugh said. “I remember seeing Cade win it twice and Willie Carmichael win it. It really is awesome to be listed along with those names. Playing at Greeneville has meant everything to me, and to finish like this is awesome.”

With the departure of 2024 Mr. Football finalist Carson Quillen the Devils were looking for someone to step up and lead the team in 2025. Baugh filled that role perfectly and helped the Devils to a 12-2 record and state semifinal appearance. The only teams to beat the Greene Devils were Class 4A state champion Alcoa and Class 5A state runner up Sevier County.

“Caden has an unbelievable work ethic. He goes at it in the weight room, and he was really important in getting this team to work and put in the effort that we needed,” Greeneville coach Eddie Spradlen said. “It was big for him to develop into that leader. We had some doubters who questioned what he could accomplish this year. He wanted to have his best senior year, and he took it on himself to prove those people wrong.”

Baugh finished the year with 2,653 passing yards and 36 touchdowns while completing 77 percent of his passes. He only threw 37 incomplete passes and averaged 16.7 yards per pass attempt. On the ground Baugh ran 129 times for 1,152 yards with 14 touchdowns.

“Caden is very versatile in what he can do. He really worked over the offseason on throwing the football and improved a lot in that area. But what really set him apart as a quarterback was his ability to run the football, he has great speed,” Spradlen said.

He finished his time at Greeneville fourth in single-season passing yards, only behind his father, Cody, and Ballard. He is tied for third in single season touchdown passes with his father, and only behind Ballard. He finishes third in career touchdown passes with 57 behind Ballard and Brady Quillen. In week one against Morristown West Baugh set the program record for the longest pass when he hit Taren Claridy for a 96-yard touchdown.

Cody Baugh was also a finalist for Mr. Football in 2002 and for Caden getting the family bragging rights made the award even more special.

“It’s funny, I just asked him if he wants to hold the trophy and see what it feels like,” the younger Baugh joked. “It’s pretty cool.”

The other Mr. Football finalists in Class 4A were Alcoa quarterback Thomas Manu and Upperman quarterback Bronzdon Chaffin. Greene Devils fans had a chance to see both at Burley Stadium this season.

High school head coaches and members of the media nominated the finalists. A committee of statewide sports writers selected winners based on performance in the 2025 regular season. Academics and character were also taken into consideration.

The awards were presented to the top football players in each of the nine classifications of the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association. The top kickers in the state were also recognized. There were three finalists in this category, regardless of their school’s classification.
