The Chuckey-Doak Lady Black Knights suffered a heartbreaking 5-4 defeat to District 1-A counterpart Cosby in overtime on Tuesday night.
After leading 4-2 with 12 minutes to go two late goals, including one with 37 seconds left, forced overtime where the Lady Eagles capitalized on their first opportunity to end the night.
“It was two very evenly matched teams who played their hearts out on the field and just kind of left it on the field. It’s unfortunate that they got the goal before we did in that overtime period, but I think whoever got the ball first was going to get that goal,” Lady Black Knights Head Coach Anna Ricker stated.
It was Chuckey-Doak’s first District 1-1A game and serves as their first conference loss. They dropped to 0-2-1 on the season after the loss.
Chuckey-Doak started slow and kept the ball in the middle third and couldn’t put together many attacks. Cosby struck first in the 15th minute and assumed a 1-0 lead before the Lady Knights finally answered in the 30th minute. Hailey Williamson was able to ricochet a pass off a Cosby defender and into the goal to tie it.
While it may have been accidental and unintentional, she made sure to secure a goal of her own with a 25-yard dart only three minutes later in the 33rd to break the short tie and take a 2-1 lead.
The Lady Knights held a 2-1 lead at the break.
Caitlin Larsen padded the lead with a swift goal in the 51st minute to go up 3-1 on Cosby. Coach Ricker spoke about the switch to move Hailey Williamson up front and the connection her and Larsen created. She explained by saying, “We moved Hailey Williamson from sweeper up to offense and I think things started clicking between her and Caitlin Larsen. So, I think what was working right there was just that push from Hailey moving forward.”
The lead was cut to one with a Cosby goal in the 66th minute, but Lindsey Rojas immediately responded with a goal in the 68th to boost Chuckey-Doak’s lead back to two at 4-2.
After going up 4-2, things started slowly falling apart. A Lady Eagle goal in the 73rd cut the score to 4-3. While trying to thwart off a comeback and hold on to a win, Chuckey-Doak gave up a goal with 37 seconds left that tied the game and sent it to overtime.
Both teams prepared for two five-minute overtime periods before potential penalty kicks. The “golden goal” rule was in effect which serves as a sudden death factor.
Cosby made the most of the opportunity given to them and scored on their first shot attempt of the overtime period in the 84th minute to end it. Chuckey-Doak fell to Cosby 5-4 in the end.
Chuckey-Doak’s Hailey Williamson, Caitlin Larsen, and Lindsey Rojas were credited with goals.
They host Cherokee on Thursday for their next contest. They host Gatlinburg-Pittman next Tuesday for their next District 1-1A match.
“We have to learn from it. We’re a very young team and I’ve mentioned that all along so we have to learn from the loss and get better. So, the only thing that we can do with this loss is be a better team the next time we step onto the field. We’re going to have more district matches and hopefully play better in the next one and we’re going to learn from it and see what happens next,” Coach Ricker said.
